If I can play only one round.....
« on: March 30, 2011, 10:15:07 AM »
...in May, do I play the revised #2 or try and play the Dormie Club? I played #2 about 10 years ago.

Jim:

I think you play the Dormie Club as it is "public" and may not be in the near future.  It just takes care of a potential future headache trying to gain access.  Further, I would think that #2 might need a little maturing to bring out its newfound glory.

Just my opinion of course.

Looks like Dormie wants you to come based on this little article:  I took the liberty of bolding up my favorite piece.

http://tinyurl.com/4on3whl

Meanwhile, MHK has hired Brad King Communications in Winston-Salem to promote and market Dormie Club.

“We’re not big PR people,” Mackey says.

President Brad King says the project is unique for his company because “we are pretty much getting in on the ground floor.”

“I first heard about Dormie Club about five years ago, and the anticipation has been building since then,” King says. “The golf course is an architectural masterpiece, and I don’t throw a term like that around lightly. It’s a great story, so we’re anxious to promote it and get it out.”

To that end, King has developed advertisements that will soon appear in the Triad and Triangle business journals as well as Business North Carolina and Golfweek magazines. He is also lining up statewide and national reviewers to get the golf course ranked on those levels.

Jim -

I played both earlier this month, and you can't go wrong with either course.

I loved the experience at the Dormie Club -- my wife and I were the only group that morning so we literally had the course to ourselves -- and the course is very, very good...excellent land, a lot of interesting holes and some outstanding greens.  Plus the standard GCA fodder of width, ground game, etc.  (An interesting note -- the club has a printout of Chip Gaskins' photo tour thread on proud display!!!)

But I'd still steer you to #2.  Its current form is playing very well with an incredible combination of firm/fast, recovery options and, of course, devilish greens.  Plus, the shock when comparing what you saw at #2 decade ago and what you'd experience in May could be cause enough.

All that said, I'd note that it's a ten minute drive from #2 to the Dormie Club -- even if you have only one day, why not try and play both?

Wow, that's a $1000 day for a civilian.

Not too shabby if it's the only golf expenditure for a month.

I am paying for flights, rooms, dinner, rental car, and caddies so it is and will be an expensive day. It looks like I will play Dormie Sunday and am trying to play #2 Monday if it is open. Charity outing not until Tuesday.

Jim - are you playing Dormie this Sunday afternoon? If so, do you have 4? Also, I may try to get out bright and early on Monday morning before driving home. Do you want me to try to get a tee time on #2 through my dad? His guest rate is better than what you can do through the resort. I will be in Pinehurst this weekend.

Thanks Steve, but I will be there May 8 for Dormie and hopefully May 9 for #2. If I need help, I will certainly contact you. I would be curious to hear your report on Dormie after you play though.

You don't owe anyone on here any explanation.  I was just busting balls.

Have fun...I look forward to hearing about it.

I probably won't play Dormie this trip. But if a fellow GCAer was going to be there, well...

Thanks. I hope to give you a full update shortly. It is too cold here in Baltimore. At least it's not Chicago ;).
