O/T Five Courses to play or replay on your Bucket List
« on: March 25, 2011, 09:52:24 PM »
Forgetting for a moment that you may feel too feeble to play them , or the cost is prohibitive, what five courses would take precedence over all others before you depart this mortal coil.

You may well have played the some of the greats before, include those if you wish, however  it does diminish the field.

My choices will come later.

Bob:

Really, my five that I most look forward to playing are the four I'm working on at some stage right now, plus the other course at Streamsong [by that Jimbo Wright fellow].

But if I have to limit it to courses that are open for play today, I would choose Cypress Point, National, Crystal Downs, and the two I've still not crossed off my must-see list, Banff and Jasper.  I am almost superstitious about those two, fearing that if I ever do go play them, I might keel over because my list will be done!

High Pointe would be way up on my list if only it were open.

Not sure what you're waiting for Bob?  My 5 - Old Course, Carnoustie, Dornoch, RCD, Tryall.

Bob,

Selecting the five is much tougher than "whipping out" 25 but here goes mine and why:

1. Pine Valley - there are a lot of intelligent people who have had it #1 for a long long time.  I'm fascinated to see why, whether it is playing it or at the Crump Cup.

2. NGLA -  I'm in the middle of reading "scotland's gift" and yearn to be able to see it and visualize the descriptions in the book and numerous educational discussions here.

3.  Cypress Point - I drove 17 mile with my wife several years ago and she saw a sign and the course and said I should stop so we could go in and check it out.  I start laughing and said that wasn't going to be possible.  I couldn't get her to understand why.  Seriously though, I have had dreams about what I would hit on 16 and how I would hit it

4.  Muirfield - it was ten years ago this september that i saw her for the first time.  I get to return to see her this august with my dad and brother and will cherish it forever.

5.  Morfontaine - For some reason I have this secret magical garden pictured.  It seems like it would a haven of beauty, peace,  and solitude.

Five I've never played, and want to:

Cypress Point
Royal Dornoch
Ballybunion
Pacific Dunes
Royal Melbourne (I want to climb out over the fence)

I'm not sure those really are THE five, or that any five are THE five -- but those are a strong five among whatever the number is.

This is a tough question.  The first courses that come to mind are all ones that I have played and would love to see again.
NGLA
Royal Melbourne West
St. Andrews Old
Swinley Forest
Cypress Point

If I made the list courses that I haven't played, but would really, really like to:
Shinnecock Hills
Pine Valley
Morfontaine
Silloth on Solway
Myopia

In this order, none of which I've played:
Cypress
Royal Melbourne
Pine Valley
Augusta
NGLA

Monfortaine almost makes the list for the very reasons stated by Sean.

Tom-
From this post and others you've written recently, it sounds like you think Streamsong is going to be a special place. Do you have a sense for when both courses are likely to be open?

Pine Valley used to be on my list, but after walking it during a Crump Cup, I realize I don't have the game to play it.  It would just beat me up.
Cypress Point - After everything I have read about this course, I think I would enjoy both the time on the course and having lunch in the clubhouse.
Augusta National - I have been there 5 times and will be there again this year for a practice round - it looks wonderful and I think I would enjoy a day there playing from the members tees.
TOC - I've played it 5 times (once in reverse) - it's a magical experience.  I would never turn down an afternoon there, followed by a nice meal at the Dunvegan (Hi Sheena!)
Number 5 - Hummm - I am sitting here with a nice glass of red wine with many ideas swimming in my head.  I think I come down on a toss up - Old McDonald at Bandon (I love Doaks courses) or Sand Hills in NB.  Send me to either and I'm happy.

Carl:

All 18 holes of our course are shaped now, and maybe 13 or 14 of the Coore and Crenshaw course, so I am not speculating anymore -- I am certain it's going to be a special place.

I am pretty confident that I will be able to go back there in December or January and have a hit around all 18 holes on our course, barring some unforeseen delay.  The real opening for the two courses is targeted for the late fall of 2012.

Cruden Bay - had a chance to walk it and am anxious to play there
National Golf Links
Cypress Point
Royal Melbourne
Pacific Dunes oops, I forgot the obvious choice in Pine Valley

Replay list:

Sand Hills
Royal County Down
Pebble Beach
St. Andrews (I need to see it in better weather...I walked in...you would have too, or you wouldn't have gone out in the first place)
Cuscowilla - I absolutely loved it the one time I played there and would enjoy another go

None of the replays would bump one of those on top.
