Aronimink had a mix of hard but not fast greens and I wonder if it has more elevation change on approach shots than the pros are used to.

That's a good question Mike. Perhaps, too, brute length plays into the equation. Aronimink, to me at least, seems to play longer with many key uphill holes: #1, #4 (slight), #6, #9, #11, #15, #18.

i do not think the courses length had anything to do with it.
it was the way the greens played that week.
many extremely difficult hole locations, combined with a slower than usual speed.

I still can't believe on the 600+ yard par 5 9th that Bustin' Dustin Johnson reached it in two, with a 4 iron for his second.  I think they could back that tee up to the Mission Control Center at Tom Paul's farm and DJ still might be able to get there in regulation.  ;)

Greens are quite difficult and it's tough to get the ball close to many of the hole locations.

I got to play with a prominent tour player on the Wed before the tourney and asked him his thoughts on scoring that week.  After his two practice rounds on Mon and Tues he said that he thought scoring would be quite low.  Having played there many times, I was surprised at his response and told him so.  I basically said "I know you guys are really, really good but I'd be surprised if it's that low."

Well, I got a call from him on Friday night after he barely made the cut and he said..."I was wrong, you were right, this place is damn tough."

He absolutely loved the golf course and can't wait to return this year.

I wonder if all the Aronimink members are now asking for slower greens and more interesting tee/pin locations?

in difficulty relative to par on the PGA Tour:

http://www.pgatour.com/2011/tournaments/r009/03/22/ShotLink.BayHill/index.html

I'm a little confused by the link.
It notes Bay Hill went from par 72 to 70 two years ago, then lists it 5th with a 72.9ish scoring average (.9ish over par)
If that scoring average is correct, wouldn't it be 2.9 ish over par against a par of 70 and therefore the toughest on the list (in relation to par-the same as the others are ranked)?

On a side note, I'd say a course averaging 73 and change against a par of 72 was tougher than a course  averaging 71.98 against a par 70.
(particularly when the feat was acheived by merely changing par on two holes)

Jeff,

I agree completely with you.  361 days a year PGA National plays as a 7050 yard par 72.  When the pros come it is a 7150 yard par 70.  As far as I'm concerned, every 4 the pros make on the 525 yard tenth is a birdie.

There was so much talk about how 'hard' PGA National was.  But that whole discussion is predicated on the pro's score relative to par.  If we called it a par-72 and they shot the same score, the winner would have been 17-under.  You think there would still be a lot of the 'hard' discussion?
