Golf Man-Caves
« on: March 10, 2011, 06:00:40 PM »
If you're anything like me, you've probably compiled a lot of golf momentoes - flags, logo balls, scorecards, books, etc. I started collecting flags in lieu of buying golf shirts in the pro shop.

Most of this stuff makes its way into my den, aka my Golf Man Cave.

Feel free to post your own and perhaps talk about some of your prized possessions.

Below:

- The diplomas are going to eventually be replaced by a 4x6 foot Ballyneal layout done by my mural-painting wife, just as soon as she finishes the kids rooms (2 down, 1 to go)

- On top of the bookshelf is lone golf achievement - the 1997 Sycamore Cup trophy (won by me and my partner, fellow GCAer Jeff Tang).

- Prized non-golf momento: Willie Stargell bobblehead

- Not shown (in the bookshelf): a Hole-In-One certificate for my late grandfather's lone ace, in 1989 after playing the game for probably 50 years. He's the reason I play this game.

- More flags and an assortment of trademark orange Illini hats in various shades of sun-drenchedness

- For Tim Bert...a framed poster of the Composite Course at Blackwolf Run from the '98 Womens Open. This will soon be replaced by four 16x20 black and white pics I had made from canvasondemand.com (thanks Groupon!)

I also have shoeboxes full of golf scorecards and yardage books, not pictured

I'll take the liberty of posting my buddy Jimbo Tang's golf cave. He takes a much classier approach to hanging up his flags. Plus I like the symbolism of the blank frame representing the next, great golf adventure. Deep stuff!

Jim,
I have been wondering how best to use my flags - thanks for the motivation.
We have just been doing some painting so all my stuff is down.

Guys,

I love the idea of buying flags. What sort if price do they tend to sell for?

Jim -- You are assuming we are "alloted" a man-cave. . . .

That's a cool story of your grandfather's Ace. Good use of the man-cave.

And I agree with Kavanaugh, that is a cool tree.

Look, I don't want to make a joke of that tree.  When he is framing golf flags and doing whatever young turks do in man caves, that tree is going to fall right where his kid rides that plastic death trap.  When I was about that age I had a neighbors tree of the same ilk.  Every time a branch fell my wife would pick it up and throw it across the fence.  It was a weekly battle that I quite enjoyed watching my wife fight.  The tree, besides being a phallic symbol fitting of this thread, brought back some happy memories of my early marriage.

Barney, do you have orange fluorescent construction signs and cones in your man cave?  Is its floor paved with asphalt?

That is not the first time I've been called a psycho.

That is the first time it was meant in a nice way.

A Pacific Dunes flag has filled in the last available spot on my wall.

As a matter of fact, my worlds rarely collide.  No one, outside of family, who I have ever played golf with has been inside my house more than once.  The thought of taking a friend on a tour of my golfing conquests is quite troubling.  Not that there is anything wrong with that.

Jim- The blank frame is deeper than deep. Before I read Jim C`s description I though maybe I needed special glasses.

Oh, what I would do to get a copy of that Framed Blackwolf Run print...

My man cave is of the golf / Phillies variety.

I find it highly unlikely that anyone on this web site has a more impressive man cave than Jim Franklin. It is legendary.

Jim,

Two things:

- Love the wee storm trooper chap you have. I think I saw a nodding one in the back of someones car only yesterday if thats what it is?

- I can't say I've ever seen flags for sale at a club, so I thought you might have been nipping back out to the course in the late evening after a few to many in the clubhouse? ;)

Cheers,

James

Unfortunately, mine is NLE since we moved in October. And I don't know how to post pictures, but here is a link to a Facebook album with photos.

Prized possessions...

- All 15 issues of Sports Illustrated with AP on the cover, all signed by him. There may be only 1 other such collection in the world (if Howdy Giles has them all). AP's office in Latrobe is actually missing one issue :)
- A signed Moe Norman Golf Digest
- The 1955 Life with Hogan on the cover
- A full set of clubs that belonged to Dick Tiddy, the teammate of AP that recruited him to Wake Forest
- 3 copies of The Confidential Guide
- Pictures of me holding both the US Open trophy and The Claret Jug, and posing with AP and his Masters trophy. Just like him, I'm missing the PGA :(

Doug, that is impressive.  All I have is a "Madoff Securities 2002" golf outing" cap, a signed photograph of Mickey Mantle, the handwriten recipe to the bread pudding in the R & A clubhouse and a lifesize cardboard cutout of Lee Trevino courtesy of a Dodge dealership in the 1970's (including the band-aid on his forearm covering the tattoo of his former girlfriend's name.
