Ridiculous that a "Golf" blog would would refer to PB as "housing the elite of the elites" while lauding the "public" beach below.  This infers that somehow PB is restrictive or ultra private when, in actuality, you could cash your welfare check and get on.

Not cool at all. I'm traveling to Pebble in 3 weeks. Never been on the course before and am really psyched to see it. That would suck to go all the way out there only to find a big-ass crater.

Eco-terrorism, perhaps? Maybe the same kind of people who liberate minks from their cages now want to liberate beach-front property from golf courses.

Or the right to lifers who kill doctors?

I seem to recall that the Japanese ownership stabilized that green with a sea wall. It may not have been the 9th and could've been either the 10th or both. Either way, they showed exceptional stewardship.

It begs the question:  Had they succeeded would a permit be issued to restore?  I'm guessing the coastal commission and the town of Carmel would consider the golf course a non-conforming permitted use but the issue is whether its being grandfathered includes restoration rights.

2 possibilities:

1) Donald Trump... wanting to make sure HE owns the most spectacular courses in the world, so he decided to rip Pebble apart

2) GCA.com fanatics, finding the course lack a deep bunker

I think I may have to check to see if my father took any trips out to Monterey lately.  The last time we played there (and into a 2-3 club wind), I swear he said "I don't care how pretty this hole is, it's too f***ing hard.  Someone should blow it up and make it 50 yards shorter"

Bogey, I believe you have hit on the only conceivable motive. Which wouldn't surprise me if the next logical step is to look in house.
