Congrats, John, way to go.

Selfishly I hope it does not mean he will post less! :)

John Vander Borght has been chosen to be the USGA's Director of Rules Communication.

What exactly is this position?  i.e. what will John do?
Jim,
I corrected the job title to Manager of Rules Communication. As I understand it the manager administers the annual USGA/PGA rules schools and does outreach to golfers so they can learn and understand the rules

John,
Way to go!  We've got to play at least once before you leave town.

All the best and congratulations!

Way to go, Big John!  ;D

The perhaps inadvertent good news from the USGA is that very, very few people are going to get the nerve to argue any rules matters with John.

John,
Congratulations. The USGA is making some wise choices in recent years and this is certainly one of them.

John: Please give Jerry Kelley a call. If a ball is deemed lost if it can't be located after a 5 minute search, why do you get another 10 minutes to take photos in an id attempt? If you can't identify it, you have not found it. (Or is there a decision on this?)

And congratulations too.

David,
Decision 27/5.5
27/5.5  Original Ball Found Within Five-Minute Search Period Not Identified Until After Period Has Elapsed
Q. A player plays a second shot, searches for his ball for just over four minutes and then starts to walk back down the fairway to play another ball under Rule 27-1. A ball is then found within the five-minute search period, but as the player is now a considerable distance away, he is unable to identify the ball as his before the search period has elapsed. What is the ruling?
A. As a ball was found within five minutes of beginning search, the player is allowed enough time to reach the area in order to identify it. If the player identifies the ball as his, it is not a "lost ball" even though the identification takes place after the five-minute search period has elapsed.

Thank you, Pete.

Perhaps the ID process needs a time limit too. I doubt today's fiasco was what they had in mind.

Wow to echo what others have said, that is very cool to see one of the gang from back in the day getting what is surely his dream gig.  With John dedication to the rules this is the place for him.

Congrats as well JVB!!!

Dear John,

I was delighted to hear about your new assignment with the USGA, but I must admit I am sad that you'll be leaving us in Nor Cal.

Fortunately, through Golf Club Atlas I know we'll stay in touch.

I hope to see you, before you pack up and move eastward. Do I dare ask...how many boxes of golf-related books?

Best always,

Em

John - congratulations and glad to have you here in NJ

I'll be up at Golf House in a couple weeks - hope to see you then

George
