Best Bunker Photo Thread
« on: February 25, 2011, 09:01:19 PM »
A quick search of the site (who knows?) did not reveal a thread of the best bunker photos....I suspect it has been tried before, but I've got some new photos and maybe you do too. :-)

I'll start here and jump in with a few more favorites soon.

I really like this beauty from Whistling Straits (and God knows there are plenty to choose from at Whistling Straits).  It is way deep, an interesting shape, strategically placed and I love the sleepers.

Okay, let's see some cool pix.

Well...since none of the rest of you want to play...

How about a completely different animal.  I really like shallow bunkers that are narrow and have interesting shapes.  Although they are not deep they lead to all sorts of interesting lies, stances and shots.  Check out this one from Fountainbleau and imagine the shots you might have to hit from the back part of this bunker  ( Note to Ed Oden:  I was holding out this photo as I suspect you would have made the case that you could see a "G", but since you found a good "G", I felt it was okay to post it!)  I have another one that illustrates this point from Chantilly...maybe if anyone else finds this topic interesting, I'll post it.

Bart, I don't have much to choose from but here's some of Dan and Dave's work at bayside. The orientation is all wrong as this pic is taken perpendicular to the line of the par 3 8th hole.

Darn, Facebook changed it's pic format and no longer lets me easily use as host. Sorry about the size. If you go to FB and look on my wall you should be able to see bigger.

Bart, that's only a "G" in arabic.

What do you think about this bunker?

Ed:

Very interesting question....:-0

I don't like the aesthetics much, but it creates for an interesting shot...I ought to know.

I am certain that the picture will be posted any second now.

Adam:

My eyes aren't good enough to make much out of that picture, and I am an eye surgeon :-)     But it does look like it may illustrate the same point...shallow narrow bunkers in interesting shapes lead to challenging and interesting shots.

Thanks.

David,

Is that some kind of a joke?

It looks like bunker with a bad hair piece.

It's name is inspired by a bunker at Pine Valley.  It is known as 'Kermit's A__hole'.

That's #15 at Long Cove. We rebuilt that bunker during my time there and replaced the surrounds with zoysia grass. It's almost too small to get a back swing.

A look at bunkering at the recently restored Flossmoor, south of Chicago, and a brief tour of similar bunkering:

Interesting that so far Dye has 3 examples being shown. It is interesting because Dye probably isn't known for Bunker aesthetics or eye candy.
The one thing I really noticed from that Long Cove picture was how incredibly low profile the green was!
the interviewer asked beck how he felt "being the bob dylan of the 90's" and beck quitely responded "i actually feel more like the bon jovi of the 60's"

Got up and down there to a back pin -- complete luck!

The best bunkers are those which are singular and can't be ignored and/or make one have to deal with the other architectural elements of the hole.  Bunkering really should be a very simple process that for ideas of eye candy and lazy design have become needlessly more and more complicated.

What should be the 10th at Princes if the owners ever get into their thick skulls that 27 holes does not not a course make.

Weston-s-Mare's Road Hole

Huntercombe's 12th.

Woking's 3rd.

New Zealand's 4th.

The percentage of really critical bunkers out there is so low that it makes me wonder if folks have a decent idea of why bunkers should exist.

What do you all think of the bunker in front of this long, downhill par 3 at Chantilly?  Again, I believe it would lead to some very interesting recovery shots !

Bart

I like it a lot Bart.

Simpson built a lot of those narrow, well shaped and well positioned bunkers placed on the line of play, often at ninety degrees to what we would expect these days. This means different length shots were caught whilst leaving width...

This one seems to allow the run up shot but still requires it to be landed in the right spot...
