William Flynn - "The Nature Faker", now in publication
« on: February 21, 2011, 08:07:11 AM »
The seminal book on the architecture of William Flynn, "The Nature Faker", written by Wayne S. Morrison and Thomas E. Paul is now available on CD in lovely packaging.

It is incredibly extensive, coming in at over 2200 pages, and is jam-packed with incredible and rare architectural drawings, articles, pictures, and descriptive narrative.

For vital historical information on any one of Flynn's great courses alone, it's well worth the $75 price.   However, when one considers the breadth and depth of information on courses from The Country Club to Shinnecock, from Cherry Hills to Cascasdes, from Kittansett to Boca Raton, and Merion to Lancaster, it is truly a special treat for the architectural buff.

Years in the making, and including those infamous "Board Minutes", "The Nature Faker" is an incredible accomplishment compiling a treasure trove of collected information in viable. easily search-able form.

From Wayne Morrison, see ordering info below;

If you don't mind alerting the GCA gang interested in obtaining a copy of the book, for those that wish to pay by check, they can email me at:  wsmorrison@hotmail.com to let me know they are sending a $75 check along with return address to:

Wayne Morrison
209 Avon Road
Narberth, PA  19072

For those with a PayPal account, they can email me that is their preferred method of payment (expedites the transaction since I don't have to wait for checks) and I will send them a request for payment via email.  I'm going to set up a website shortly to facilitate PayPal transactions and will let you know when that is in place.
Thanks.

Mike,

I thought April fools was April 1st...

You're joking.  Right?

I've been asking and waiting for this for a long time, but 2200 pages?!?!

PMing you now.

I received my copy last week and I have to say it more than exceeded my expectations.  Unbelievable in its detail and amazing illustarations to satisfy any William Flynn/GCA geek.
Great idea to use the disc format as I don't think any coffee table could handle the weight of a hardcover book!
Congrats to Wayne and Tom!

Did they deal with the 7th hole at Shinnecock? If yes, did they include drawings?

Bill,

It includes a letter from Toomey detailing the work.

They rebuilt that green (it was proposed to be the 16th hole at the time), as well as the bunkers, and created a new tee 7 yards to the left of the original, which was later abandoned.

Mike,

They did a lot more to the 7th hole at Shinnecock...they took out the long classic Redan bunker in front, and a similar-sized one behind the green that Macdonald built, replacing it with one on the right side. I think they brought the green back towards the tee and eliminated the kickmound landing area. It is an excellent hole, but it is not really a Redan now.

Is there any protection to keep people from making copies?  The community of people interested in this book is so small that I hope we can police each other better than we have done in the past.

John,

It's a great question and I'm not sure the answer.

Of course, with a copy you wouldn't get the snazzy packaging, but that probably wouldn't be much of a deterrent.

Have you ever seen Wayne scull a sand wedge?  If you have, then you'd never consider duplicating the disk.

Congratulations Wayne and TE Paul. I'm looking forward to seeing your masterpiece, which will be the definitive work on Flynn and I suspect may be the most comprehensive study done of any golf architect.

Jim,

"2200 pages?  The Durants covered The History of Civilization in less."

That's only because Will made 871,208 posts with the bulk of his information and discoveries on the early www.earlyhistoryoftheworld.com blog... Tom's been working toward breaking that record ever since...

Does Moriarty have a copy?  How about the boys over at Slims Saloon? I would love to hear an unbiased review.

John,

And what exactly would be "unbiased" about any of them?  ;)

Seriously, I do hope he/they buy a copy if they are truly interested in the historical origins of many of the courses discussed here.

The amount of historical detail included is staggering, frankly.

Better yet, why don't you buy a copy and then provide your own unbiased review?
