An example to us all...
« on: February 18, 2011, 05:31:58 PM »
When I read some of the petty stuff concerning golf, our likes and dislikes, bashing one particular architect because of some hidden agenda, I get great pleasure from something like this. This is awe inspiring.

Mr. Huntley- Makes you realize how important golf can be on so many levels. Thanks for sharing that as it made my day.

Bob,

This morning, one of my best friends, a fellow I've been playing golf with for 47 years, a terrific guy and a ferocious competitor died unexpectedly.

You have to remember to take care of your family and your business, and then,............ play as much golf as you can.

This ain't a dress rehersal, enjoy it while you can.

Thank you for sharing that, Bob.  The parallel to the Nike/Tiger Woods commercial at the end was tremendous.

I'll play with no legs and arms! Let me slouch upright, swing with the club clenched in my teeth and worm my body onward to the next shot.

No caddy! I will drag my bag on a rope cinched around my middle!

No one likes a joke more than me but this is a poor attempt and rather offensive.

No need to be offended, I'm sure Malcolm is as moved as any of us, he simply chose to show his passion for golf in another manner.

Thanks for the link, Bob. Puts it all in perspective rather nicely.

George- If after viewing the video of this inspiring individual someone chooses to then make an ill timed and classless joke at the expense of the disabled then so be it. Did you personally find it either clever or amusing? I`m not sure of your motivation of trying to jump in and be the peace maker but it doesn`t change my feeling on the matter. I received two personal messages from posters who were also offended but chose not to jump into the middle which I applaud.

I didn't think about his comments one way or the other, they're simply different from what I thought after viewing. Imho, one needn't comment each time one finds something on here a little bizarre or even offensive. Just read it, file it away and move along, and let others draw their own opinions. Doing more merely adds fuel to the fire, again imho. But you're more than entitled to your opinion as well.

He is a phenomenal athlete - I met him at a pro-am in Dubai this time last year - he strikes it pure every time.  Very impressive to watch - he was a 3 handicap then...

If there ever was something that was mind-bottling...the fact that this guy is a 3 is it!  WOW!!!!  Makes me realize that I need to practice some more.  A 3!!!  Are you kidding me?  Kudos!

Didn't mean to offend anybody. I am in awe of Mr. Santos and wish I had a scintilla of his innate athletic ability.

My point was meant to be a bit of (perhaps humorous in its extreme)  hyperbole that despite even the most debilitating setbacks I would attempt to play on, additionally refusing the assistance of a caddy and "carrying" my own bag.

My club in NYC operates an annual  program for the "wounded warriors" which all the members support during the New York City Marathon.  Servicemen and women who are missing arms, legs and often a combination of both are transported from Walter Reed Hospital in DC by bus to the clubhouse and as the bus passes through Maryland, Pennsylvania and New Jersey on it's way to the city a motorcycle escort forms and grows and grows as more and more riders join in each state culminating in their arrival at 37th Street which is closed down and soon becomes packed with motorcycles. We provide free lodging and meals for the competitors and their families. They have the full use of our clubhouse as their base of operations during the Marathon weekend.

Where do we find such men and women?

The slow motion swing sequence near the end of the film is absolutely amazing.

This man shows an extreme amount of conviction and courage in the face of extraordinary difficulties.  We should all think of this man when we get upset over bad shots and unlucky bounces.

Bob - This is one of those stories that you can think about when you feel like you're having a bad day on the course... or off. How can we fuss about a bad shot when this guy can "smile like a baby" on one leg. Puts things into perspective, doesn't it?
