Folks, TWO SPOTS left for Sunday.  Sign up!  Weather looks better by the moment, and there will be some classic GCAers there as well.

If I can get my Board Presentation finished tomorrow, I'm looking good.

Now, trying to remember how to golf...hmmmm....how do I hold this thing again?

Are we still short two players for Sunday?

I ran into a fellow Springdale member in the parking lot while departing McCullough's who might be persuaded to join us.

Also... What a prize day for mid February! Temps in the high 60's and a feisty wind. I think McCulough's is best played brown and dormant. Green would just look wrong. It even smelled OK.

The only downer was a deluge of walk ons that made it depressingly Muni-esque from a pace of play standpoint.

Thanks to John, Jason and Mike for joining me.

Malcolm,

If you have any extra players for Sunday, they would be welcome.  We still have two spots open.

McCullough's is a fun golf course.  It's a replica course, but it did not try to replicate holes too closely.  This made it original and very enjoyable to play.  3 and 10 were favorite holes for me, although we missed a few of the back nine holes due to darkness.  It was also my first landfill golf course.  I'm guessing it would be a lot of fun to build a course like that.

Mike, I'll try to be at Seaview by 11 to make sure everything is all set for the groups.  I'm guessing most folks will be there between 11 and 11:30.

Here's Seaview in 1931.   Notice the size of the greens compared to even the next picture in 1957.

Notice also the loss of the original 5th green, which was the "Punchbowl" featured in George Thomas's golf architecture book.

It was moved further right, although it seems remnants were still apparent in 1957.

Also notice all the dumb pines planted around that time, which still  are to the course''s detriment today;

Here is the photo of the original punchbowl 5th green in Thomas's book;

The drawing of the original 1914 routing seen below remains intact today.

My home is about 15 minutes north of Seaview, I will probably arrive right around 11am, walk around, maybe hit some balls and check out the work going on currently.

Damn windy down here today, hopefully that will dry out the soil somewhat.

Is the "Special Guest" also known as 007?

I look forward to seeing everyone, please travel safely and call my cell if you need anything.

I have to leave directly following the golf--I could say I have a dinner party to attend, to sound pretentious and maybe get some laughs, but in all actuality, it's my brother in law's birthday, so headed to my wife's parents immediately.

David Moriarty, we weren't addressing you.  Please leave us alone.

Doug Braunsdorf,

Classy as usual, but haven't you heard?   The war is over.  TPaul's Philly "Posse" has been scattered.  They ran out of ammo long ago and have headed for the hills.

If you want me or anyone else to leave you alone, then plan your outings by a less public medium.  Or hasn't private email gotten to the more provincial parts of the greater Philadelphia area?

Doug,

Bizarrely, David seems to think that pissing a bunch of people off so much that they won't talk to him anymore is some sort of pyrrhic victory so I certainly won't deny him that tiny modicum of pleasure.

It should be rather obvious to everyone on GCA (and Max's Lounge for that matter)  by now that David has some hopelessly unresolved issues related to his time spent in Philadelphia years ago so I'd ask you and others to have some sympathy and understanding while he continues desperately to work out these deep, painful, burning memories of the city of William Penn.

Perhaps he was rolled for being perceived as an obnoxious jerk after a frat party at Swarthmore?

Personally, although I'm admittedly speculating here, I think it's far more likely that it's bitterness related to unintentionally maintaining his virginity through many long, long, lonely nights while metriculating here, but how that manifested itself as an unnatural hatred of Hugh Wilson and Merion I'll leave to much brighter minds and qualified professional therapeutic opinions.

Hi Mike-

We're going to have a good day tomorrow, golf with friends.  As it should be.

I do hope the winds down here will have dried the golf course out for 'youse' coming down tomorrow.  It's been blowing 20mph+ most of the day today.  At least we won't have greenhead flies.

What is kind of interesting, and I am not certain if any recognize in the earliest photo, is the bold print J-4.  This label is for NJ-4, which was the name for NJ Route 4 at the time.  This road was changed to US 9 in the 1953 highway renumbering.  Wikipedia has a few articles on that.

Thanks again for posting the historic aerials link.  Travel safe and see you tomorrow.

Mike,

You had it right in your post before.  It was just a joke to Joe.  I do find it interesting that this Braundorf guy is still carrying a grudge after almost five years.  He was one of the originals in TEPaul's self described "Philadelphia Possee" whose stated aim was to try and drum me off of the site, but he didn't know me then and he doesn't know me now, but I guess with petty vendettas that sort of thing doesn't matter.

As for your post, pure nonsense.  Don't you ever tire of being constantly wrong about everything?

Enjoy your round.

I think many cases of cabin fever were cured this afternoon.  A good time appeared to be had by all.  Thanks everyone, and especially JNC for doing the legwork on the arrangements.

Oh, McGettigans at the corner is a nice place to hang after a round at Seaview,

I should mention that Wayne Morrison and Tom Paul's book on William Flynn, "The Nature Faker", is now available for sale and just looking at it tonight on CD, it's a very exhaustive work.

I'll have more to say about it in coming days.

Thanks to everyone for joining us today at Seaview.  The weather held out for us, and we had a day of bright sunshine by the Shore.  The Bay Course was in decent shape for mid-February, and the layout there is just phenomenal.  The caliber of people there => marginal as always ;), but a great time was had nonetheless.

Reality hit back hard on the drive back: after a day of golf and sun, the last fifty miles of my drive through Upstate NY were through a blizzard.  It gave me a good reminder as to why I drove all that way this weekend.

John,

Glad to hear you made it back safe.

I have lived in NJ for most of my life and have never really appreciated the Atlantic City area as a winter golfing haven. These past couple of days have opened up my eyes.

I also really enjoyed reading Mike Cirba's posts from 2008 as to the Clarence Geist's vision of Seaview as a a winter refuge vis a vis Philadelphia and New York City with their usual snow accumulation.

I stand enlightened! Also it was a pleasure to meet all of you fellow GCAers who turned up to play.

Cheers!

Thank you JNC "LP" for stimulating and executing, with some minor assistance from the "Philly Mob,"  on what was a delightful game and gathering of golf-starved GCAer's at Atlantic City's Seaview. Though a bit scruffy and worn around the edges, the bones of some very good golf were in evidence there. I would concur with Joe "Bandit" Bausch that Mc Gilicutty's was a perfect, post-round spot to hoist a pint.

As our meandering foursomes worked around the Bay course, I found myself reflecting on a different time, many decades ago, and imagined our hardy forefathers clambering onto the train for a ride down to enjoy their Winter golf. Short of that train ride and the company of some solid caddies, I don't know that they could have enjoyed their day much more than we did, during our day at Seaview, in 2011.

It is wonderful times like we embraced yesterday that keep me encouraged that all is not lost for the game of golf; but we have much to do to recapture it... from those that seek only to exploit it, without reinvesting where prudent. Only that dedicated commitment, by each in their own way, will ensure we leave the game in a healthy state for all those that will follow us.

Cheers,
Kris
"I said in a talk at the Dunhill Tournament in St. Andrews a few years back that I thought any of the caddies I'd had that week would probably make a good golf course architect. We all want to ask golfers of all abilities to get more out of their games -caddies do that for a living." T.Doak
