Best Beach and Golf Combination
« on: February 09, 2011, 06:21:38 PM »
My wife wants to go to the beach this summer and I want to play golf.  She already ruled out Pebble Beach :-) and Hawaii.

Where are some good locations to take the wife and kids and still be able to play some decent courses?

Thanks,
Paul

Ireland. You should see the beaches next to Tralee, Ballybunion, Lahinch, Doonbeg and many more!!!!

Playa Grande in the DR is a great place to play and relax.

Where is your starting point?

Kiawah is really nice. Ginn resort south of St Augustine is nice. Watch out for the large rocks hidden in the water. Been a long time but liked Marco Island in Florida. Buddy of mine loves Cap Cana in the D.R.

Charleston and Jacksonville areas, St Andrews has two fine beaches (does your wife have a wetsuit?). I can think of plenty beaches, but not with great golf.  Montauk is good for you and wife.  PEI and Cape Breton have both.

Paul, you're in Lafayette, right?  Talk to Bernhardt about his condo at Navarre Beach, it's spectacular 3BR, and Hidden Creek and Tiger Point not far.  NW Florida has the most beautiful beaches anywhere.  And the BP oil is gone.

KIAWAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Best beach I've ever seen.  Family friendly.  Kiawah Ocean is flat out great.  Very, very family friendly.  I have an 8 year old and a 6 year old and they've been welcomed everywhere on the resort with nothing but open arms.  Great activities...hiking, kayaking, boat tours/dolphin watching.  The Sancturay Hotel is truly amazing.  But it is kind of expenive.  Call them to see if you can score a deal.

We have 2 little kids so we are not going out of the country.  So far, Kiawah / South Carolina area and along Florida coast seems to be the best bet.

I will call John and see if he still has his condo in Navarre Beach or did he trade it in for something in Carmel :-).

Kiawah is good, but the fake village is a bit tacky.  TOC is lovely and there are some other courses not too far away which good.

Another area I would suggest is Nantucket.  The beach(es) are just as good as Kiawah.  The island is better, a lot better because it is historic and the town knocks Kiawah on its ass.  The golf suffers a bit unless you know someone, mind you the price for a game drops a ton as well.

You may want to consider a spot in western Michigan along the lake.  Some great beaches and a few courses not too far away if you pick the right spot.

Myrtle Beach and south of there
 Multiple good courses.
plenty for you and the family to do
kiowah will break the bank and there's far more variety in Myrtle
much better value and argueably better golf
caledonia, true blue, dunes, heathland

Cape Cod is nice and there are many public options there
cranberry valley, dennis Pines, Highland Links-worth the drive (do it early)

Paul,

What week during the summer? June is a very different answer from August.

Drive or fly?

Where is your starting point?

Paul,

You did say this SUMMER, didn't you ?

Forget the bozos who are recommending Florida and the South in general.

Atlantic City might be your best bet.

Golf, beaches, casinos and good food with a breeze to match.

Hilton Head if you can get some invites together to Long Cove and Colleton River.  play Harbortown just to say you tried it.  I didnt care for the place.  But the beaches are very nice and there are lots of hotel choices.

AC is great for nitelife, beaches at O.C. in NJ are better, and the golf is great.  My top five courses in that area are as follows: 1 Atlantic City / 2 Hidden Creek (private) / Sandbarrens / Twisted Dune / Shore Gate.  All very good courses.

Enjoy!

Isle of Palms, S.C. is a wonderful place for a family vacation and you're in reach of all the Charleston area courses including Kiawah.
THE NEXT SEVEN:  Alfred E. Tupp Holmes Municipal Golf Course, Willi Plett's Sportspark and Driving Range, Peachtree, Par 56, Browns Mill, Cross Creek, Piedmont Driving Club

Paul,

Litchfield/Pawleys Island area of SC cannot be beat for the combination of beach, family fun and golf. The area offers one of the best bangs for your buck you will find anywhere. One of the most beautiful and family friendly beaches on the planet, lots of activities for the kids... and, great golf like Caledonia and True Blue at LOW summer rates! Also, Charleston is only an hour away, offering a great fun and educational day trip for the family.

If you want more info on the area send me an email or IM.

Mike

I would say that staying and playing at the Mid Ocean Club in Bermuda and walking along the pink beaches close by is the best.
