HE SWUNG WITH A DIVINE FURY AND PUTTED LIKE A DEMON

Spare a thought over your preferred tickle for James Braid for it was this day in 1870 that he was born.  Braid was unquestionably my favourite of all the wonderful golfers that have come and gone.  Have a read:

Thanks, Sean.  A good read; and here's to that fine old gent. Yet another reason to visit Walton Heath one day.

And once again I'm reminded of the fluidity of those early gca days (and of how, frankly, some of the best names and writers of the time had personal agendas that negatively coloured their thoughts about eachother and previous work).  Look at how so simply Braid puts across the 'strategic' aim way back in 1902:

"There should as frequently as possible be (at least) two possible alternative methods of playing the hole – an easy one, a difficult one – and there should be a chance of gaining a stroke when the latter is chosen."
