It is 99% sure to be a new course.  The only two courses in Rio are both private, and even if they tried to renovate one of them, there's no way the Rio Organizing Committee could justify investing money into a private club.

No architect has been hired.  Several have postured as to their qualifications or suitability for the project.  There are lots of politics, but I believe it will be decided by the locals, and not all the governing bodies who are jockeying to be in control of it.

MW1979 - you laugh at taking golf to Scotland during the Olmpics as its a different country, however football is being played in both Glasgow, Scotland and Cardiff, Wales during the London Olympics.

In 1908 golf wasn't in the end played at the Olympics but the plan was thus; The intention of the BOA was to make each competitor play six rounds of golf over just three days. Results would then count towards both the individual competition and the team competition. As if this wasn't tiring enough, the Association decided that these rounds would take place at three different courses: Royal St George's, Cinque Ports and Prince's. At the time these were the most testing, and potentially most exhausting, courses in the British Isles.

Thanks Tom, I am pleased to hear there is a good chance the Tour et al will not bring their approach to the Olympics.
