Do some students of architecture get
« on: January 30, 2011, 03:37:59 AM »
too old and too tired to differentiate good from bad architecture, too old and tired to appreciate the distinction between the general and subtle architectural features ?

Do they become stale, too fatigued to retain their powers of observation that once allowed them to properly analyze architectural features ?

As an example, if someone was going to play and analyze a golf course, and they played golf the day before, and then went out to dinner, and partied to 4:00 am, would they then be able to play and properly analyze a golf course the next morning ?

Should there be a limit on the age or a restriction on the activity level of someone analyzing a golf course ?

Should those rating or analyzing golf courses, once they reach age 47, have to be re-certified as being capable of analyzing a golf course, especially after a day of golf followed by partying until the wee hours of the morning ?

Should Ran Morrissett retire ?

Has he gotten too old to travel, play, party and analyze golf courses ?

Should that task be assigned to younger enthusiasts, or older, seasoned veterans whose capacity to play and party is unlimited ?

Pat, perhaps Ran's contacts were dried out from the wind off the ocean and this affected his ability to see the course's subtleties. A good wind will do that.

;<))  ..perhaps, as the Blowhard must allways assure or avail themselve of good footing, lest they tumble backwards and hurt themselves..

but professional students have to get their ya-ya's out.. and continually challenge their mental acuity, for some that path never ends..  you're only young once, but you can be immature forever

Pat - You are on to something. Every course rater should be required on the first tee to:

- Bend over and touch his toes without throwing up,
- Read an eye chart correctly from his putting stance,
- Spell Aroniminck backwards quickly.

I do think some or perhaps many get too set in their ways and refuse to look a things anew.  That is the down side of exprience.

The most interesting reviews I see here and elsewhere are of the off the beaten track courses nobody has ever heard of.

The other issue I observe sometimes is that beyond the web site "favorites", every other golf course in the world is a hopeless dog not worthy of a trip to the parking lot.
