Sean - I didn't remember the putting green and 1st tee being continuous at Pennard. I picture them very close... are they indeed one unit?

No, there are different grass heights, but it makes little difference as there is a drop down from the pg to the tee.  Same for Burnham really, except the pg is side by side shot gun with the tee and a triple barrel with the house and a quad barrel with the 18th green. Its a bit unusual to be standing just down the incline and at tee level while practice putting.  It can pay to watch the proceedings because it isn't unheard of for a ball to make its way toward the pg.   Below gives an idea of the quad proximity.

According to their web site, it was established in 1921 by a group of Glencoe residents and the front nine was built in 1922 on the Cook County Forest Preserve land, using funds from those Glencoe residents. The back nine was constructed in 1930 on land owned and added to by the Village of Glencoe adjacent to the golf course.

I'm not sure, but I wonder if the back nine was one of those new deal golf courses, given the timing.  The front nine may be a home made affair.  They always did have sort of different character, with the front nine going back and forth more than the back that has some gentle doglegs that seemed like a more professional routing.

While I think it is only used for tournaments, the back tee markers at Capilano can be found on the putting green.

Jeff,

Do you know who originally designed Glencoe?  Joe Roseman?

Jud,

Back on the contentious Cobbs Creek thread, TMac did a nice list of early public courses and listed George O'Neil rather than Roseman.  I don't know where he got that info, but it sounds right from memory, and CW and another source I have don't have it listed.

I haven't see a mention of Castle Stuart yet? There are 2 back tees on the 10th there to create different angles and one of those tees is at the top of the hill, actually on a corner of the putting green.

Cheers,

James

It certainly feels that way at Friar's Head, though I can't remember if it's actually connected?

The putting green is an extension of the 9th green and runs over to the first tee if I recall correctly?
