Robin Hiseman - European Tour comes to Bahrain
« on: January 24, 2011, 05:29:20 AM »
Robin Hiseman has had the European Senior Tour's Casa Serena Open plays on his course of the same name for the past three years, but this week brings the first full European Tour event to a course of his creation: Volvo Golf Champions at The Royal Golf Club Bahrain (Riffa Views).

It will be an annual event that, if I am not mistaken, will be held first-up from 2012 onwards as a season opening "tournament of champions" much like the US Tour event held each January at Kapalua.

Robin and Adam Lawrence have both described the course as bold and wild in parts, starting with a front-to-back green that drops by more than a metre from front to back, so it will definitely we worth tuning in for.

The tournament: http://www.europeantour.com/europeantour/season=2011/tournamentid=2011005/index.html

The course: http://www.theroyalgolfclub.com/ and http://www.egd.com/pages/projects_detaildesigners.php?id=11

Thanks for the heads-up.  Hopefully the television coverage shows plenty of the course.

Setting off to Bahrain tomorrow Scott.

Some of the pro's played today and I think it would be fair to say the complexity of the greens is not what they are accustomed to!

 I expect some controversy!!

Yes indeed.  It kind of sets the tone straight away that this isn't your regular tour course.

Hope the gof channel gives us a good shot at ground level of the course

Won't it be Monty who needs the flak jacket?  I assume he'll be taking credit for the design.......

Mark P,

Your assumption is indeed correct. From the Euro Tour site:

Quote
“I will feel very proud when Europe’s best players go head to head over The Montgomerie Course, Bahrain in January. With European Golf Design and the vision of the Royal Golf Club, I think we have created a really superb Championship course and the fact that it has been selected to host such a major new European Tour event really underlines the success of work we have all done.

"With my Ryder Cup duties over, I am now looking forward to focusing on my own golf game which I have rather neglected recently. I will be looking for a strong start to the new season and hope that my unique insider knowledge of The Montgomerie Course will stand me in good stead at the Volvo Golf Champions.”

A lot of the player quotes on the Tour website are funny. They had a player reaction to Castle Stuart getting the Scots Open and one of the Molinari boys was quoted as saying how great it would be to play on "a classic Scottish links". ;D

I wonder if Monty will need directions to the first tee ? Hopefully all will go well and they do say that is the strength of the European Tour in that theirs a great variance in the courses that are played.

The reports from Bahrain aren't too complimentary so far. Some comments on the slopes in the greens. Looks like a bit of viewing will have to be done to see what the comments are about.

Today's scores suggest they coped OK with the greens.  13 players (so far) have shot 67 or better.

When I was watching the commentator (Bruce Critchley?) said the greens were running at 9.2, which will probably make them some of the slowest greens played all year.  He insinuated they would be unplayable in the wind if they were any faster, in my opinion they could go a bit faster before those sort of issues occurred.

Ross,

Putting can't be that hard there, even Sergio shot a 67.

It is tough to tell from television, and perhaps I am more than biased after two very enjoyable rounds with Robin at the Buda, but the course looks very interesting based on the bits I have seen.  It is not too often you have three members of a professional 3 ball all choosing different targets from the tee.

Wow, a tour event on a course without bunkers, that has to be a first.

Robin H, Adam L,

I have seen highly contoured greens that are well designed and highly contoured greens that are poorly designed.

So that this thread can move beyond the typical "The pros don't like them because they are contoured" argument, are you able to make a case for why the greens are well designed.

I found Poulter's tweeted comments a little disappointing, frankly.  When all someone can do is say the greens are crap while you hit 17 of them and take 35 putts while someone else shoots 64, I'm going to side with the architect.  Innocent until proven guilty.

I looked through the course tour at the website and was impressed at the number of greens that are over 40 yards deep.  I imagine that Poulter will find a completely different collection of putts to complain about tomorrow.

Poulter is a moron when it comes to understanding golf courses.  See his comments in the latest Golf World (UK publication) on RSG for compelling proof.  He just doesn't understand.  I would have tghought being condemned by Poulter was high praise indeed.

Interesting that he hit 17GIR and the took 35 putts.  He's normally very. Good with the putter so it shows he couldn't figure how to get his approaches close.  More proof that contoured greens are not just about the putting.

No bunkers? Vive la difference.

Here's a link to some of Poulter's comments.

http://www.irishgolfdesk.com/news-files/2011/1/28/harrington-diplomatic-as-poulter-lashes-montys-bahrain-green.html

“Played great today 35 putts, missed 1 green, Simply the WORST greens i have ever seen & im not joking they are embarrassing.”

Normally when some says they hit 17 greens and had 35 putts the response is you obviously hit it too far from the hole.

One of the issues here is that people will listen to his views, unfortunately his views carry weight with a lot of people.

Why doesn't Poulter just bury the hatchet with Monty.

Harrignton likes the greens and Molinari is -11, so what's Poulter complaining about. Even Michael Campbell shot 143 (-1).

Silly reaction from Poulter as usual.

Sergio's ball plugs in greenside bunker face. But there are no bunkers this week, so he can apparently rake bunker foot prints in the area he want to drop before dropping.  The foot prints he has just spent 3 minutes making.  Ridiculous rules, ridiculous ruling, borderline cheating player. What a joke.the idea that you can alter the ground to create your own lie through the green is ridiculous.

David,

Just wrong to call him a cheat if the rules allow it.  Anyway, presumably the drop was a penalty drop, so it's not like he's getting away with murder, is it?
