It just occured to me that one interesting avenue of research to pursue on the life and times and realities of what those seminal late 19th and early 20th century immigrant professionals did over here in the 1890s and the first decade of the 20th century is to research anywhere possible but particularly in the early club records to determine the first and best evidence that those early immigrant pros were actually paid by a club or out of a club's treasury to do anything for them and particularly to serve as their resident pro or even as their architect!

I would doubt much could be found on this from any old newspaper or magazine articles and so I suppose the best place to look would be the archives of any of those old clubs or the 1890s and early 1900s.

I will personally volunteer to supply a gross of the most delicious popsicles imaginable to the one who can find the earliest examples of actual and factual evidence of this. No speculation will be accepted!  ;)

Tommy,

I'd love to take you up on the popsicles! Not sure where to begin, but I guess those original clubs of the USGA would be a start. I did read where some gent wrote a book with some excerpts on the early Scotish pros and caddies. It included some tales of the Chicago lads that used to pack Capone's pieces as well as his clubs when he played, as he was deathly afraid of being killed or kidnapped back in the day.

Anyway, super thread if we can find material to post. It would also be interesting to see/learn about the amount of early architecture done by some of these folks. Some we know of, many we don't!

Cheers,
Kris
"I said in a talk at the Dunhill Tournament in St. Andrews a few years back that I thought any of the caddies I'd had that week would probably make a good golf course architect. We all want to ask golfers of all abilities to get more out of their games -caddies do that for a living." T.Doak
