At Reddish Vale, we don't have a practice green at all due to lack of space. Funnily enough though, I have been applying my mind to the problem and have come up with exactly the solution suggested here.

This is the current first hole;

And this is my idea;

Those I've shown it to at the club like it. What do you guys think?

Jeff,

I put one on the tenth tee at Country Club of Florida because people go into the shop or house at the turn and sometimes get out of position.  It is about a 1,000 s.f. and was met with resistence at first.  I offered to have it taken out a year later and everyone said no, they (with the exception of a few) like it now.  I also put one in at Willow Oaks Country Club (1st hole) and the same thing, but now they wouldn't trade it for anything.  We call it the "on deck" putter.

Duncan,

I like it and I bet the person that owns the first house on the row there on the left likes it too!

I've played several, but the only one I can think of right now is the Peninsula at Indian River Bay (Delaware), a Nicklaus course.

I have always liked this feature.  After seeing it again at White Bear, I did it at the Quarry.

When I worked at Glencoe GC in Illinois, they had the back of some par 3 tees converted to putting greens so golfers could do something while waiting to play.

It seems kind of old timey, but on the first tee, really convenient, too.  I saw it mentioned on another thread and wonder if any of you have examples.

Jeff

Any chance of posting some pics. I'd really like to see some of your examples.

There's a course in the east bay that has this feature. I'm having a hard time recalling the name. I think it's where Tommy Bolt use to either play or was the pro.

Orinda Country Club and Contra Costa Country club have this feature.

Spanish Peaks, Weiskopf design in Big Sky, MT is another example. Large Pg just behind the first tee. Sometimes also has the back tee on the far right side of the Pg surface. Kind of cool feature. But theyre not worried about high traffic...

The practice putting green at The Renaissance Club in Scotland is connected to the first tee, so much so in fact the tees feel like they are on the putting green!

Mr. Becker, you beat me to the punch with Inverness.

Also the first tee at Country Club of Columbus in Georgia and the practice putting green are attached.  This is a really cool Ross that was restored/rennovated (whatever you want to call it) by Drew Rogers.

And yes, Paul, what you say about Hawks Ridge is still true.

Hawks Ridge outside of Altanta have cups on all the Par 3 tee boxes - they have bent grass and roll the tee boxes.

I have not been back in 3 years so it might have changed.

At least in 1984 the back tee at Rocherster CC in Minnesota (Tillinghast) was a part of the practice green.  I remember being very nervous about taking a divot with my 3 wood tee shot in a college tournament.

Mac. I've seen putting greens put in behind tees mid round at known gridlock holes. David. It had to be you. Witty well informed and smart.    Unless Orinda and costra county(?) Are public, its another.

Orinda CC and Contra Costa CC have putting greens adjacent to the first tee, but not part of them, and not used as tees anymore.  Olympic Ocean until fairly recently had a tee on part of the adjacent putting green...literally on the green.  I haven't seen that tee used for a while.

Pennard has a beautiful set up.  The range practice green and 1st flow essentially as one with the house (proshop, locker room and spike bar) 20 steps from the tee.

Neil:  The back tee there IS on the putting green, it's all mowed at green height.  I saw that 20 years ago at Loblolly Pines and did the same thing a few years ago in our re-do of Atlantic City Country Club.

I was just back to The Renaissance Club taking a final look at the proposed expansion of the course.  If in fact we go with the larger expansion, the first three holes will become part of a larger practice facility, and that green/tee combination will go away -- in which case they want me to build something similar for the new first hole (the present fourth).

The putting green and first tee at ARBUCKLE GOLF CLUB in Northern California's Sacramento Valley are connected.

I can't think of or mention ARBUCKLE without bringing up it's terrific greenkeeper, and friend,  from the seventies and eighties, DICK HOWE.  He could do more with less, and maintained the finest putting surfaces in the north state.  Sadly gone from us, but NEVER FORGOTTEN!

I reckon I've got pretty much exactly the same level of professional liability insurance as Dr Mac had when he designed the course!

Sean - I didn't remember the putting green and 1st tee being continuous at Pennard. I picture them very close... are they indeed one unit?

Rock Creek Cattle has the practice green right next to #1 tee. Just a little part of what makes RCCC such a course.

Country Club of Columbus, home of the Southeastern Amateur, does it for the PG and #1 tee.

Hawk's Ridge no longer cuts cups on tee boxes.  Last year's heat was so oppressive it finally took out the bent grass tees at Hawk's Ridge.  I think they may have even changed over to zoysia tees.  Hawk's Ridge has always been maintained flawlessly wall to wall but I never understood the cups cut into the tee boxes thing.The conditioning was so over the top that that "gimmick", and I mean that in a non negative way, seemd to garner more attention and discussion that the course itself.
