Holston and Old Mac are two courses that I could have a lot of fun on forever.  The fun is created by the width and the ability to hit whatever you want off the tee plus the challenge of hitting accurate approach shots.   You can't screw around on the greens either which keeps you on your toes.  I had tons of fun on both.

Anthony,

I'll answer for you.

"It is not a string of 4's or 5's, but the possibility of everything from 2 to 8."

Tom D - that's neat, a new way of thinking about this for me. That is, instead of seeing on a card (and on the ground as I play) a Par 4, a Par 4, a Par 5, a Par 3, a par 4, a par 4 etc, it will be interesting when I play a course to see whether that sequence is more like: from 4-7, from 3-6, from 3-5, from 2-6, from 3-8, from 2-6 etc.

Fun is something different, instead of the same old, same old.

Fun is finishing the round with the same ball you started with.

Fun is a course that gives you a few reasonable chances for birdies, balanced by a few holes where you are thrilled just to make par.  It is not a string of 4's or 5's, but the possibility of everything from 2 to 8.

This is pretty good stuff here!  If I can finish a hole with the same ball I started with, and score an 8, without having any really bad shots, just shots I didn't think about hard enough, or fully realize the consequences of, that is FUN!  If when I write down that 8, I feel sure that if I went back to the tee and tried again knowing what not to do, I could cut that 8 in half or better, that is FUN!

I rank North Berwick as the best golf course I have played, and I always think back as being the funnest courses I have ever played.  It was my first round in Scotland, and the last 12 holes were played in some of the worst wind/ rain I have experienced, but I had a BLAST!

It is so different from anything I have ever seen... hitting over (or through) old stone walls early in the round, or the Pit hole. Hitting blind shots uphill taking aim at poles in the distance The craziness of the 16th green... all of it is very unique, which makes for a memorable time, and FUN!  I played there only once, and yet remember every step like it was yesterday.

That is how I personally define the best - and most fun - courses I have played.  And certainly North Berwick West Links is right there!
