« on: January 13, 2011, 02:28:44 PM »
My 10 Favorite Tilly Family Photographs:

10 – Taken ca.1907, this is his wife Lillian in front, with Mrs. C.C. Worthington and her two daughter-in-laws behind her. It was taken on one of the hiking trails in Worthington’s nature preserve, Buckwood Park. Below you can make out Shawnee Island and the opposite shore where in 4 years Shawnee Inn and Tilly’s first course would be built:

9 – Tilly and his bicycle. Taken in 1879 when he was four years old:

8 – Tilly and his Cricket team. Taken in 1889 when he was 16 years old. Any guesses as to where it was taken?

7 – Benjamin Collins Tillinghast, Tilly’s father. Taken in 1876 when Tilly was 1:

6- Lavinia Worral Davis Tillinghast, Tilly’s mother. Taken in 1876 when Tilly was 1:

5- The precocious Tilly in 1876 at 1 year of age:

4- Tilly and his Uncle the manager of B.C. Tillinghast’s 2nd rubber goods store in Philly. Taken in 1890:

3- The original JUMBO the Elephant. Taken at the London Zoo in 1880. The 5-year old Tilly is sitting atop his head:

2- Lillian Tillinghast. This photograph of Tilly’s wife was taken in 1895. It won the $25 first prize in a photo contest sponsored by the Philadelphia Inquirer:

1- “Tilly the Terror” at 6 months of age. The oldest known photograph of him:

Interesting that this won an award. I'd guess just about everyone has a pic just like this hanging on some grandparents' wall somewhere.

Love the first pic, #10, that is classic. I could see that one winning an award!

I would guess at The Phila. Cricket Club, but i am not sure that they had a club pitch by that date.

The best guess that the family can make is that it was taken on the steps of what would become the clubhouse of the Belfield Club in the mid-1890's. The Tillinghast's were members there and Tilly took this photograph of the clubhouse that was published in Outing magazine in June, 1899:

Shivas,

Why do you think Tilly loved Scotland so much? It was the KILTS!

Now I know where e-Trade got the idea for the baby spokesman commercials, in particular the one where he said he "saved a pantload".

Joe,

I'm told this was modelled after an early Villanova University men's basketball uniform...  ;D
