Aerial of the Day #22 - 14 Feb 2002
« on: February 14, 2002, 06:06:13 AM »
As I type this, it just occurred to me that Coeur d'Alene in Idaho would be appropriate for Valentine's Day, as "Coeur" is French for "heart".  But it's too late.  Today's has a cape hole at the bottom right that it almost looks as if you could drive the green:

I'm a little surprised no one has chimed in with comments about playing this one, as I remember a few in the past have mentioned this as a regional underappreciated gem.

I'm going to need help at some point with more specifics about this one as I know very little about it besides the architect and location.

I have played this course. It is the defination of a resort course, beautiful, immaculate conditioning, great service and a not too challenging course.  The course was built on a site too small for a championship length course, hence the floating green and water driving range. You ride a boat from the lodge over to the golf course. A great experience, but only a good course.

Actually the fairways are so nice, you actually feel bad about taking divots.

In case I was misunderstood, this is not Coeur d'Alene!

I don't know this course, but curling and bowling come to mind with the abundance of tree planted straignt lined fairways.

The bunkers remind me of those paramecium-like (or are they amoeba-like?) ones at...was it Chicago Golf Club?

Any architect-ural connection?

Scott:

I'm logging on between meetings hoping for clues from others.

That Cape-type right-angle dog leg has to be a signature hole!

Is that the entrance road running through the hole on the bottom-left? I have no idea what course this is, but that might help someone else figure it out.

No connection with Chicago GC.

Just looked it up, the cape hole is #2, par 5, 472 yards.

It looks like the entrance road cuts right through the hole (#11) on the lower left.

George Bahto would rap you across the knuckles with a ruler for calling that a cape hole!  ;D That must be some kind of hillside that you're hitting over, otherwise it look to easy to shortcut.

With all that brown, maybe it's in the southeast & the picture is from the winter?

If you think these fairways are tree lined, guess again - this course looks barren compared to some northeastern courses.

Cape-like?

Dormant Bermuda is quite a bit lighter than that (biege is a decent analogy).

If you recall the Fisher's and Myopia aerials, they looked this way, and were taken in the winter time. (Hint alert!)

I got it (with a little prodding from Scott). Hint: Pound for pound, this state might feature the architects best work.

This course really is a hidden gem, and it is rarely ever discussed on this site.

Another difficult routing to figure.  does it go 5-4-4-4-3-4-3-4-5
3-4-3-4-5-4-4-4-4?

RJ Daley:

4-5-4-4-3-4-3-4-5: 36

3-4-3-4-4-4-4-4-4: 34!

This guy can fit a routing into any piece of property.

EDIT: Whoops, simultaneous typing.

From Dick's note, front nine starts 4-5, then rest is correct.  On back nine, change the par 5 to a 4.  Yes, it closes with 6 par 4's.

Par 3's on back are 228 and 242, resp, from tips.

Scott --

Was it Chicago GC with all of the long, skinny bunkers?

These courses are start to bleed together in my hapless head. :P

Are we talking about a course in a small state -- a course with an Indian name?

It looks like this pic is taken on veranda of Pinehurst resort.

Can't vouch for the Indian name.  I think I know which one you're thinking of.

Dick,
Your picture gives away the clue and she doesn't have anything to do with golf.  Just last week she asked me if I'd been "introduced to Halley".  Didn't know what she meant, until now.

Actually, Dick's reply gives two clues about the course.

Dan - you are right, but you might know this indian by a different name.

Just like arrogant Americans.  We kick the Indians off their land and name the golf courses we build on top of it after the tribe.

Kind of like the definition of suburbs:  Where the streets and subdivisions are named after the trees you knocked down to build them.
