So, let's say you won the $330 million lottery...
« on: January 05, 2011, 03:20:45 PM »
2 people, one from Washington and one from Idaho, just won the $330 million Mega Millions lottery.

Sadly, my ticket was a bust, but I had some sweet dreams for about 15 minutes. One of those dreams was, outside of local clubs, what national membership I would join if I had won. Other than Bayonne (since it is close to where my parents live in NJ) and Ballyneal, I couldn't come up with much.

So, let me ask you folks - what clubs would you join? The winner of this lottery will get about $100 million after taxes. Let's generously assume that they will share half of that with family and charity, leaving about $50 million (or about $35 million in cash) to play with. You have no connections so any club that requires connections and what not would be out (i.e. ANGC, Cypress, etc.). Just clubs with national membership that requires nothing more than cash.

Which national membership would you join?

If limited to one club, I'd say LACC, which has two great courses and is located in a major city with great year-round weather and a lot of other entertainment possibilities apart from golf.

Can we make it international (because with that much money why stop at the US border) because there are a few in Ireland that immediately come to mind.....

I want to limit it to US since almost all UK clubs offer national/international membership, so it is merely a question of your preference.

US is a bit tougher as not all clubs offer national membership nor allow membership without some connections (I don't think LACC would qualify).

I love playing this game!

Richard,

I used to say that I would join here or there or wherever, but now I would make Brookside in Canton my home club and then just join The Outpost Club.

I'd apply to join my friend Adam at Ballyneal. I can't tell you what else I'd do, lest I further incur the wrath of Jax. :)

I did win this lottery.  I won $2.

I think I'll re-join the Wilmette Muni...

Take that, my firm won $7!

I would have so many friends I wouldn't need to join anywhere.

Years ago while as a teaching assistant a student of mine that had been performing solidly in class laid a big old egg on an exam.  As I passed back his marked paper I asked what happened.  He said he was ready to study that weekend, but remembered he bought a lottery ticket, one of those scratch off ones CA used to have eons ago.  He won 10k.  So he called his buddies and went out all weekend!

I'd seriously consider a significant upgrade from the Super 8 Motel in Weymouth the next time I played at Myopia Hunt and The Country Club.

There is a poorly designed, underfunded and mismanaged golf course here in my local community that I would buy and fix up into a stunner.
What does it matter if the poor player can putt all the way from tee to green, provided that he has to zigzag so frequently that he takes six or seven putts to reach it?     --Alistair Mackenzie--

Since CPC is off the table, if Bob Huntley would play with me at least once a week, MPCC.

If I could find a regular game and get away 3-4 months each year, Kiawah Island Club.

If I could get away a 4-5 months each year and have a seasonal club elsewhere, Carlton Woods.

Seriously, I'd hopefully skip the EPA process and just restore Cobb's Creek (the creek as well as the course) myself.

I'd buy Merion and every weekend I'd partner with Cirba against TEP and Moriarty.

Would you play Colt's West course or the Macdonald/Whigham East layout?

I'm not sure about which national club I'd join, but I've thought about what I'd do if I won a jackpot like that.

Take my long-time golf buddy, who I started playing the game with in Va. Beach in the late '70s and who is now a public school teacher in New Orleans, to The Masters.

Treat three of my current golf buddies on an all-expenses-paid trip to Bandon.

Take two of my brothers-in-law, the golfers, to the US Open.

I'd start traveling to England, Ireland and Scotland to play links golf.

Then I might think about joining a national golf club in the U.S.

I'd go on a life-long trip playing golf courses around the world, travelling, skiing and the such.

Heh, I'm from Russia and we don't have many courses out there. And what we have is WAY expensive. Don't think it is really worth it.-))

I thought I was on a roll.  I won $7 a couple of weeks ago on powerball, and $2 on megabucks last week.  I figured this one was going to be mine this week because I was 'trending' like my handicap.  Then, I was going to buy a golf swing with my winnings and take it on the road.  Now, I'm stuck with this same old swing, on the same old course, with the same old golf buddies.  Oh well...  ;D ;D

Ballyneal would be it for me, and I'd be sure to put my name on the waiting list at Sand Hills, if they'd have me.

I'd join all of the clubs that John Kavanaugh is a member of.
I get it, you are mad at the world because you are an adult caddie and few people take you seriously.

Excellent spellers usually lack any vision or common sense.

I know plenty of courses that are in the red, and they are killing it.
