Tom, Dick, and Harry
« on: January 06, 2011, 04:30:18 PM »
Tom Morris was a golfer of significant talent, a course designer of significant talent, and a club builder also of significant talent I would suppose.

So the challenge here is to find 1 to 3 people of the same first name that perform these functions with significant talent.

I am going to take the easy one and put forth the triumvirate of
Tom Watson the golfer, Tom Doak the designer, and Tom Wishon the club builder.

Other Dicks, Harrys, whoevers?

Every one in this group should get Ben.

Ben Hogan

That's all you need.

However, you can beef it up considerably with Ben Crenshaw.

And Tricks, you call youself a golf journalist?

EDIT: Perhaps people didn't get the whoevers (whomevers?) to mean any first name is in play.

Anyone got one for Byron? ;)

Wow! Thanks Mike. That's a strong lineup. Is the modern company a continuation of the original, or is it a case where someone bought the trademark? Or, do you know?

Jack the builder was a poor businessman, yes?  Muirfield Village put him out on limb i believe and the St Andrews/NY fiasco REALLY hurt him, methinks

He may be a poor business man, but his club company is still going strong as far as I know. Muirfield Village almost bankrupt him, and his line of driving ranges went bust, but the clubs soldier on.

Another in this vane is Arnold Palmer, Arnold Palmer, Arnold Palmer. His club company eventually was sold and became Peerless golf club design/manufacturers, which seem to have faded away.
