North Berwick, Sandwich, Royal Dornoch, and The Ocean Course at Kiawah have especially phenomenal settings coupled with great architecture.

Generally, I think any course that has a wholly natural appearance is, by extension, stunningly beautiful and in possession of good golf course architecture.

Lahinch
Ballyneal
Sand Hollow - sight lines into Zion NP
Greywalls - views to Lake Superior along with the omnipresent rock outcroppings
Wine Valley - named for a reason
Bully Pulpit - Badlands golf
Links of ND - you're playing golf a stone's throw from the path Lewis and Clark took up and down the Missouri

(and I'll second Kingsley, Chambers Bay and the Bandon courses)

I don't know why I didn't mention Swinley Forest.  I played it in a February drizzle, but the combination of the forest and the heather was gorgeous.  Like the other courses I mentioned above, Swinley Forest is great and beautiful because it rests so gently on the land.

John, did you make it out to Hankley during your time in the UK? The heather there is phenomenal and it's amazingly serene -for me it felt sort of like a rugged version of Swinley...

Brian,

I got to Hankley Common, but I have heard great things about the golf course from so many different folks.  It is one of those English courses that I regret not seeing (right up there with Sunningdale, Westward Ho!, St. Enodoc, New Zealand, and Brancaster).  I'll save it for a future trip.

Old Head is the most beautiful I have seen, and I have seen many of the courses mentioned thus far. And the GCA is good enough...

Yup, JNC  - and I dare say that (for me) any course that is beautiful (to my eyes) will by definition manifest good gca (in my understanding of it)....which of course doesn't mean anything to anyone except to me....

In addition to above mentioned courses, The Cal Club has some incredible vistas and the architecture is strong as well. The views of SF are really amazing on a clear day. The clubhouse is quite a site as well from several areas on the course. Another very special place to spend a day.                               Jack

Sebonack

At the expense of NGLA.

John,

I'm not sure I'd say that.

Certainly, NGLA has its own beautiful setting, and the creation of Sebonack doesn't really diminish it in the least from my perspective.

It's simply that from a higher perch, and more waterfront land to work with, Sebonack better meets the needs of this thread.

If you feel you are with the most beautiful woman in the world and suddenly a more beautiful woman moves next door I would say that is at the first woman's expense.
