In the 60's and before, when the full course was closed for frost it was quite common for a couple of die hard groups to play from the 1st tee to the 6th green (the furthest green from the clubhouse), maybe 2,000 - 2,500 yards in distance. The winner was simply the guy who played it in the fewest strokes.
It hasn't happened in the recent past, but we do play our own par 3 cross country holes when playing a reduced course eg 5th tee to 9th green (130 yards) or 5th tee to 8th green (230 yards). The odd time we might play from the 11th tee to the 12th green just to have a very long 5.
Do you play cross country golf? Do you play long holes or short holes?
