Weekend getaway in the US
« on: January 02, 2011, 05:15:10 PM »
If you could pick one destination in the US for a weekend trip where would it be.  Must be close to a decent size airport so it will be easy to get in and out.  Maybe have 3 top quality courses to choose from maybe within an hour or so of the airport.  Also assuming access to private courses would not be a problem.

So where do you go?

Carmel/Pebble Beach hands down. Great vistas, restaurants and the golf is pretty strong as well. Play PB, Spyglass, and Pasa.

Clint, C'mon- was there a better trip last year than the Cal trip? I guess the LI trip was decent too ;)

Sounds good, easy drive also.  I was up there a few years ago and would love to do it again.

I would love to go Northeast somewhere at some point also

I found Minneapolis a treat due to the wonderful movement of the terrain. San Jose would be good too. Close enough to botgh the peninsulas and no worries about getting fogged in, or out.

I would probably pick Chicago.  I haven't played a course in the area and a few look quite interesting.  The city is great and I haven't seen it in many years.  I am a huge fan of blues.  I am a huge fan of hockey.  Yep, Chicago would be a good choice for me.

Sean,

Chicago is a great town in terms of music, food and people.  But the golf is surprisingly mediocre...In fact I'm posting a list tomorrow of my Must-Play Chicago area courses and it's pretty short relative to all that's on offer.  According to you-know-who there's exactly 1 course in the metro area that's worth travelling more than 100 miles to play and it's virtually impossible to get on...

Chicago may not have three top quality courses, but I am sure there are a few worth a go.  Visiting the city would be at least as important as the golf.

Another choice may be Charleston, but I have been there a few times recently.  Long Island sounds wonderful, but the city is quite a nasty drive away - leaving only golf as the highlight.  How bout San Franciso?  I don't know much about the golf within an hour of the city, but I would like to go anyway.  I think Santa Fe is fantastic, but I don't know about the golf nearby.  Shit, I would be happy to spend three days in Ann Arbor and just play the Michigan course, but I do think there are some gems that can be reached in an hour.

I know this isn't the States, but probably the highest on my list would be Toronto - if I had access to privates.  I realy want to see the Hockey Hall of Fame.

You either have extremely high standards or you're talking about a different Chicago than the one in Illinois....

Jud, Other than Philly and LI/MET area hard to find a city with better golf than Chicago.I've played just about everything here and believe we have 10 or 12 very good tracks. CGC, SA, OFCC, Skokie,Beverly,Butler,Black Sheep, Old Elm,Onwentsia,Knollwood,Conway,Medinah,Chicago Highlands,BobOLink,Exmoor,Cog Hill,........ How many course do we have to have be a worthy destination?

Charleston: A fantastic town, easy to fly into from St. Louis, great food, warm, cheap. Public golf includes Kiawah Island, Wild Dunes, other various resorts and publics. Privates include Yeamans, CC of Charleston, Bulls Bay, etc...

Kohler: American Club, 2 great, 1 solid, 1 so-so Dye Course, with Lawsonia a 45 min drive away. Wisconsin at it's finest.

Then, a couple more obvious choices:
Pinehurst
Carmel

If you can get on the private courses, I would go somewhere like Boston or Providence, just to be different.  Lots of courses with character in that little corner of the globe.

If you assume access to private courses, isn't the better question what US City *wouldn't* be a good choice for a weekend getaway?

Sean Arble:  there's been a lot of discussion here about golf around Santa Fe. Black Mesa alone is worth a visit, but there's also Pa-ako Ridge, two courses at Las Campanas by Nicklaus, also Cochiti. We spent a very good week there with three other couples in a nice little hotel a block off the plaza. Good restaurants.  Santa Fe is a good va cation spot.

Having attended MucciFest 2010 and done a little homework on the area, it is absolutely astonishing how much great golf course architecture can be found within a short drive of Newark's airport.  Even the so-called second tiers offer the trip of a lifetime.  The only dilemma - narrowing it down to three.

Agree.  Give me a break.  I've played a lot of golf in a lot of places....and to say that Chicago golf is mediocre is quite laughable in my opinion.

Are all courses the quality of Long Island, no...but are 10+ really really really good?  Yes.

But, Chicago is also the City of Broad Shoulders, a City of brawn and the majority of its "best" golf courses are reflective of that- Olympia Fields, Medinah, Butler.  If you're a good player, you'll love them.  If you're not, you probably won't.

Mediocre....come on.

Rethinking.  If private access is not an issue, I fly into Augusta, GA and play The National from sun-up to sun-down every day.

OK,

Maybe mediocre is a bit strong.  There are a bunch of good to very good courses in the Chicago area, but most are not so easy to access.  As for great courses, the City of Big Shoulders comes up surprisingly short....I stand by my previous statement.  If having a long weekend getaway for great golf is the first order of business, Chicago wouldn't be near the top of my list.  As a great place to visit and maybe sneak a good round or two in sure...Myrtle Beach is a fun guy's trip as well, but I wouldn't put it in the upper echelon of destinations either...

I don't know, but I get the impression you are reasonably young compared to me.  If this is the case all I can say is man cannot live on golf alone.
