Goofiest idea for a golf hole/hazard?
« on: February 18, 2002, 07:46:07 AM »
I was watching the Golf Channel profile of Gary Player on Saturday night, and they talked some with Gary about his architecure career.  Some of the discussion was around Gary's course at Sun City, and the 13'th, or "Crocodile" hole.  As Gary describes the hole, the course's owner wanted something which was highly marketable to the tourist golfer, so Gary remembered seeing Crocodiles biting at things, and thought this would add some eye-candy to the course.  The 13'th hole has a giant pond, filled with Crocodiles (separated from the hole with a high (20 or 30 foot) edge on the lake.  The hole also contains a sign urging the golfer not to climb down in the lake to play a ball (and that the course assumes no liability for those who do).

I'm not sure what the strategy for the hole is supposed to be, but it might go something like, "I could try to carry the lake on the left and reach the green ... if I make it, I've got a great shot at a birdie ... if I don't, I could take a drop, or play out ... if I play out, I could run a nice pitch up to the green, or get eaten by a crocodile ... wasn't there something in a James Bond movie about how to survive a crocodile attack?"

Is survival a fair part of the strategic calculus?

Lava.

Not on the perimeter of the fairway like some of the holes at Mauna Lani, but those holes that feature a bunker with flat bottoms and a straight up jagged lava wall on the face where there ought to be rivets or even a grassy wall. :o

It is astounding to me that somebody has not been seriously hurt, especially because a few of them are fairway hazards over 125 yards from the green. . . . . .  insanity if you ask me.

The water treatment plant for the city of Monroe, LA. is in play on two of the nine holes at the wonderful MUNY.

Playing over the runway at Casa de Campo is also "goofy" in a neat kind of way.

What about some of Muirhead's island greens with island bunkers (accessible by a small walkway from the green)?  Wish I knew how to post a photo of one of those ones.

I recall some years ago that a famous tour pro was espousing the "Water Chipping Ledge" where a 3" deep depression would be purposely built to hold water, be filled with water for normal play.

Apparently he felt that chipping from casual water should be an intregal part of the game.

John:

Gary Player gets a lot of publicity for this "stunt".

I think his next should be a 250-yard par 3 over an aquarium
full of great white sharks!
