Ben,

This is your gig, but why re-invent the wheel?  I thought that most everyone was happy with the last SunMountain edition as well as the pricing.  Any idea when we might expect to have a bag on our shoulder (s)?  Personally, I like the much smaller GCA on the side as before in Navy or Black.

Hi Lou,

Was the old bag done a couple of years ago? 5 years? Over time the design/products/availability of custom bags have changed/moved on. Sun Mountain also produce bags for Titleist which I am looking at in the UK. This is the preferred choice at the moment.

I have also been discussing with PING and they would do any colour scheme without any difference in price. The price is quite good but I am still awaiting confirmation.

A bigger Golf Club Atlas logo promotes the site ;D I can understand why you would like a similar golf bag to the old one with a smaller logo. Ping gives a lot of flexiility of choices I am just giving options/ideas at this stage and allowing GCA members to choose 'the one'

Cheers

Can Ping or Titleist do a GCA custom hat to go with the bag?
I love golf, the fightin irish, and beautiful women depending on the season and availability.

Ben:

If you're looking for color feedback (per your last post), I suggest that less is more.  A singular color (like the blue you picked) beats a combination (like the red, white, and blue).  My $.02, and thanks for asking.

- I have suggested that the Golf Club Atlas logo (minus the flags) to be on the ball pocket.

Why leave off the flags? That's the most attractive part of the logo?

WW,

I am trying to be flexible as possible - personally I would go for the single colour the three different colours is 'over the top' - I quite like the black with the red pinstripes. I assume the general consensus will be a plain navy blue or black bag with the GCA logos on it.

I will see if the flags can fit - its more likely to be embroidered as opposed to transfer. With PING for every 25000 stitches there is a additonal charge. I am trying to limit it to below 25000 albeit the removal of the flags which takes up lots of stitches in theory. I will see if it is possible to put the flags on if the majority would prefer having them on the bag.

Ben,

For what it is worth I'd prefer a Ping bag here.

Personally I would have the GCA flag too.

Good luck!

I'm not buying a bag, so take my opinion for what it's worth (probably not much), but since logo/branded merchandise is a large part of my day job, and after reading the ideas so far and seeing the design comps, I thought I'd at least offer the following:

The likelihood of a consumer wearing/using a branded/logoed product is often inversely proportional to the size of said logo, or the obnoxiousness of its presentation.

Of course here we are talking about a golf bag, which is something that there's not much choice in how often you wear it - once you put your clubs in it, you take it when you play golf. But maybe this impacts buying decisions or satisfaction with the product. I understand that you can't please everyone in something like this, and wish you the best in trying, but consider the below.

Ever notice which hats/shirts are the most popular in pro shops? Even at the nicest courses around? The smaller, understated ones. No matter how proud you are to be a member at or to have played at any given club, the vast majority of people prefer something less "in your face".

Would you rather wear a Merion hat that had the basket logo only in a handsome 1"x2" front-center embroidery , or one that had that same logo on the side with MERION in 84 pt all caps block letters across the front?

When you see member bags at golf clubs, usually it's the club crest/logo in a lower corner of the jacket pocket or ball pocket, and little more. Pine Valley doesn't put the shield on the valuables pocket and write PINE VALLEY across the side of the bag in airplane-sized lettering.

Even the version Jerry coordinated last time (in which I again did not partake) had a smaller rendition of the GCA logo - one that would not be able to be read by impatient players on the tee behind you waiting for you to clear the fairway.

Now, maybe I'm wrong and maybe the folks that are interested in a GCA golf bag do not share my sensibilities here. That is not out of the question since we are certainly different in one obvious way and that is that they are interested in carrying a GCA golf bag at all.

I think those that are asking for the clubs logo above are saying the same thing I am saying, just less clearly - giant, obnoxious text is...well...obnoxious. I think people will be happier with, and the end product will be much more tasteful with a more understated approach to the design.

It's your initiative, and on one hand that means that my opinion is completely irrelevant. But, on the other hand, since I am not buying one either way, you could consider me an unbiased (albeit uninvited) consultant giving an objective opinion with the goal of helping you arrive at the best final product for the greatest number of people.

I agree with Ryan. I'd like a bag, but would prefer much smaller writing.

Ryan

Thanks for your input - I would agree with most what you have written. The majority of GCA'ers that have replied prefer the simplified version for the bag. I have come up with a more likely design solution with the new GCA logo in post 1

Cheers

nice job Ben.

I like the Navy bag with the centered logo on the large side pocket.

Ryan,

I agree understated is better in general, so maybe just logo on the ball pocket and the large pocket.

FWIW, I'm not a Ping bag fan.

Thanks

Ben - not a likely purchaser, but that new design is, in my unsolicited opinion, much better.

Just my two cents, but I would prefer a bag with writing and logo (with flags) on the smaller ball pocket only.

Ben,
My preferences are:

Titleist/Sun Mountain
Solid black, navy as an alternative
Understated logo

Thanks for doing this. Rather like herding cats, I think.  ;)

A bigger Golf Club Atlas logo promotes the site ;D I can understand why you would like a similar golf bag to the old one with a smaller logo.

Taking this off-topic, but why do/we care about promoting the website?

It is Ran's website, a closed and invite only (to participate), so I am not sure what there is to promote by us "invited guests".  If Ran wants to promote the site, it's his decision on how to do it.

Unless of course, you expect (hope?) that you, as an owner of the bag, will be invited to play Pine Valley or Augusta because you are a member of this elite GCA (GolfCourseAccess) website ...

Obviously, I am OUT for getting a bag ...  8)

My interest in a gca-logoed bag is to stimulate interest in the site and the subject. I stumbled, mostly by accident, onto the site a couple  of years ago and have deepened my understanding of golf course architecture immensely since then. If someone sees my bag and asks about cga, then I can turn them onto something I find valuable.

I certainly don't expect to be invited to an elite club just because of the logo on my golf bag. My witty and charming nature alone should take of that.  ::)

I believe Ran approved a GCA logo bag last time. I like my bag with the discreet logo. It was cool to see others with the bag.

Bill,

This is still a 'work in progress' I will try and get approval from Ran/Ben. The new 'understated' version aims to be similar to the older version incorpoarting the new GCA logo kindly provided by Ben.

On my unfortunately only trip to Bandon two Octobers ago I was riding in the bus to the driving range, brand new GCA carry bag in front of me, when a guy I didn't know looked at me and said, "that's a stupid looking golf bag." i was somewhat taken aback, until he laughed introduced himself as Ben Dewar.

A little advertising can't hurt -- you never know who you might run in to. . .

Mark: that was whole intent of the bag - something to identify you with GCA not to advertise GCA.

I am liking the new design. I am with Carl, I thnk the logo on the ball pocket looks the best.

I am now interested with the new design. I just bought a new bag last year, but what the hey...
