Montego Bay, Jamaica - Golf?
« on: December 26, 2010, 09:48:37 AM »
I'm not bringing my clubs & didn't plan on playing until seeing a write-up Ran did on Tryall. Is this course or any course around Montego Bay really worth it?

My brother wants to play and I'm just wondering if its worth squeezing in a round for at least $150 after club rentals.

Sorry you will never get me back to that island again, not for all the Red Stripe Beer or Appleton White 100% rum. Never!

My parents left after 3 years as it had become totally unsafe. Montego Bay or should I say the  concentration camps holiday centre for the island. Rape, Murder, and if you were lucky just armed robbery.  No, never return to the home of Tia Maria

Be very careful and blood good luck

Melvyn

I was down in Montego Bay in May and played the White Whitch at the Ritz Carlton.  I think for rountrip transfer from my resort on the other side of town, rental clubs, greens fee and caddie it ran around $180.  I wouldn't pay that very often for a round of golf, but it was a pretty cool golf course, very different from what I typically find in Minchigan.  The course is cut through the mountains and jungle with a lot of dramatic elevation changes and great ocean views, partciularly on the front nine as I recall.  I thought it was worth the money, and the afternoon away from where I was staying.  My caddie was as good as any I've ever had - extremely helpful and pleasant to be around.

Ryan,
Pick a club any club, you will find something new that will serve as a learning experience. Most clubs offers professional courtersy to Golf Professionals and Superintendents and if you explain who you are and what you do, they may or IMO should waive at least the greens fee´s.

I would choose Cinnamon Hill over White Witch. I suppose it is about a 35 minute ride from Montego Bay.

Cinnamon Hill is a wonderful place to play golf.  We played five rounds there last year.  The entire staff was most hospitable, and we had the same forecaddy every day, he bent over backwards for us to enhance our experience.  We stayed at the all inclusive Rose Hall Hilton, have no complaints at all.  The staff was all very kind and the food was to die for.    The course was a mix of some very flat holes, some on and over the ocean, and a  few holes that were dramatic mountain golf.  We never felt unsafe at the hotel or on the course. We did a brief guided  shopping excursion to Montego Bay, if you are looking for trouble, that seems to be  a good place.  Just stay on the resort, and if you do travel out, do so with a large group or a guide, as we did.

Cinamon Hill is very good fun, variety of holes, great caddies.  White witch is boring mountain golf, Half Moon is boring flat golf. Tryall is excellent, after he first 3 or 4 holes it becomes good fast and firm golf with some excellent holes.     If you want some history play Manchester GC in Mandeville, 1865/67 makes it the oldest course in Western Hemisphere.  Fun 9 holes, different tees for second round.  Reasonably priced.    There are other clubs but Cinamon Hill, Tryall and Manchester is all you need.
AND all the clubs will honour your cards if you call ahead.
