Feature Interview with Kyle Phillips is posted
« on: December 03, 2010, 10:39:59 AM »
Having the understanding as to what makes for good golf doesn't do an architect any good if he and his crew can't translate it into the ground. Kyle Phillips is one of the very few architects who successfully translates big ideas into the dirt, time and time again.

I haven't played Kingsbarns so I can't comment but it still draws rave reviews to this day for the man-made features. Given how faux links have lost some of their lustre as of late, this is quite the compliment.

Since Kingsbarn opened, Kyle has gone on to many successful solo projects but none at the expense of the other. What that means is that when a Phillips course opens, it actually means something. After you design your 100th or 200th course, there is a point where the work is going to lack anything fresh or original (personally, I think that # might be around 30). Kyle is a long way from that and each and every Phillips project is of a high standard.

His work at The California Club of San Francisco is an absolute standout in my mind. Not only did the work start three feet under so that the holes would play properly, but his grand ideas paid off fabulously well. Take the 7th and 8th holes as an example of his unique talent. First, he had to vision to create these two new holes. Then look at the tiny detail work that followed, especially in front and around the 8th green with all its neat little ground game features making it seem like a hole built eighty years ago. Kyle notes that some people like the California Club every bit or more than SFGC and OC. I agree - I am one of them!

In terms of new designs, a tour around the Links Course at PGA National of Sweden impresses. From the unpromising start of open farmland with broad slope, Kyle fashioned a number of interesting holes/shots, including a Biarritz green at the seventh which lets you know how much he appreciates the work and design ideas of the masters that have gone before him. His great Home hole with its broad fairway tumbling down to the clubhouse proved superb in identifying the champion golfer of the day with Joe's only consolation being the high octane beer found inside ;D.

When natural features are present, Kyle seizes on them but when they are absent, he and his crew can create holes that hold their head high with the others. Apparently, this is particularly true at the recently opened Yas Island in Abu Dhabi of which Ben Cowan-Dewar is a big fan. According to Ben, "Yas is without a doubt the first great golf course in the Middle East and I believe (and more importantly hope) it could be a real game-changer for the region."

You aren't in Kansas any more when you play Yas Island. Note Ferrari World to the right.

Be it new designs or work like at The California Club and Wilshire, Kyle has carved out a name for himself in the upper echelon of golf course design. Here's hoping that he continues to build on his success, one project at a time.

Cheers,

For an architect "junkie" there is rarely a bigger thrill than touring the Cal Club with Kyle. I had that pleasure earlier this past summer. We hit shots, we played a little, but mostly we took apart the course hole-by-hole and he showed me what was there and why he decided on what would become a magnificent restoration/redesign.

Good interview.  Notebly absent was any discussion about him working for RTJ2 for a long period of time.

He is building a great resume of courses yet doesn't get the publicity of some of the other architects working today.

Hopefully the people at Wilshire CC will see the work at LACC and decide to move forward with phase 2 of their renovation.

Mr. Phillips was kind enough to to speak to a few dozen GCA members at his Morgan Creek design in 2007. We were licking our chops as he (and associate Mark Thawley) showed us photos and aerials from the Cal Club project (which was still in progress at the time). I remember thinking he must be on a short list of archies in line for the 4th course at Bandon, since Keiser seemed to be against repeating design group selection through Bandon Trails. Then, of course he went right back to Doak and Coore/Crenshaw, and who can really blame him?

At any rate, Phillips seems to turn out excellent courses on a consistent basis, be they original designs, redesigns or restorations on premium sites and bland land. He even seems to produce quality when environmental restrictions virtually handcuff his options.

By contrast, I've found Phillip's work under RTJ2 fairly disappointing. I suppose he made the right choice in jumping ship.

I'll disagree about lack of publicity, being underrated and underappreciated?

Kyle
Jumping ship and starting one's own firm are 2 very different business ventures.

Congratulations on another super project Kyle & Mark
I'm glad I included Kingsbarns on my trip to Scotland
Cheers

Little is said about Kyle on this site.

That was my point.

Little or less than Doak and C+C?

Little: I disagree
Cal Club + Kingsbarns have been discussed a bunch.

Less than: 2 reasons...
The bulk of his new work is overseas.
He doesn't hang out in the treehouse.

Cal Club is simply awesome.  As too is his work at RTJ near Washington DC.  Not often talked about, but really good stuff there.

Well, I'm right at 30 now, so I guess I should retire?

Do you think MacKenzie's work after 1925 was lacking anything fresh and original?

This deserves a topic.

As for Mr. Phillips.  I agree that his work isn't discussed as much as Renaissance's or C&C's here on the site.  But with the majority of his work overseas--and only a couple in the UK--this doesn't surprise me.

Though DMK has never re-done a course of Cal Club's stature, I'd associate the amount of ink he gets for his original work to be along the same lines as Kyle's.  We don't discuss Tetherow, Nanea, or Huntsman very much here either.

Under-exposed?  Maybe.  But don't say under-appreciated.  He's getting solid work and making the best of it from what pictures and interviews can glean.

I have no idea about which parts of RTJ can be attributed to Mr. Phillips, but I agree that RTJ is really really good.  IMHO it has a few too many banal holes to be considered great, but I think it also gets dinged because the clubhouse is kinda over-the-top, plus they weren't exactly pro-rater for a while.

I missed this the first time through...

"Biarritz green"

Why would he do that?  -- aren't there more Biarritz greens under construction now than during Macdonald's hay day?
I didn't see it in the interview.

What is known about the work Phillips is doing at Valderamma?  Is he changing #17?

(I thought I recall a recent thread on this but didn't follow it at the time and now can't find it).
