Travis, Kellogg, and Barker at Rumson CC

This course has been described as "neat", "sporty", "little-known", "much-vaunted", "flat", "few holes of note", "some interesting greens and bunkers", "don't go out of your way to see it", "kindled my desire for an instant replay",etc..

The attribution has been derided by some when H.H. Barker's name was mentioned as the architect, ca. 1910, and it's also been said that Raynor was there ca. 1920.

This article suggests another duo was responsible for Rumson in 1911, Travis and J. Prentice Kellogg,  with Barker helping to put teeth into it going forward.

If someone believes Rumson is truly "much-vaunted" I'd like to hear their detailed reasoning on that point.

The "much-vaunted" remark  actually was part of a put-down of Barker's resume by someone who lives south of New Jersey.  ;)
I had the whole remark, but decided to shorten it because I didn't feel like going there.  


...but if Travis, Barker and Raynor followed each other how "un-vaunted"  ;)  could it be?

I wonder where the idea that Barker designed Rumson came from?   Who knew it was rank amateurs designing it!  ;)  ;D

Didn't George once mention that Raynor was involved with Rumson at some time?

Sounds like Barker had an influence on, at least, the bunker work at  Rumson.

In May of 1911 "The Sun" reported that the course, although a good one, was  "....far from complete as to the original plans", which suggests that Barker was involved in the process of constructing/finishing the course when he got to Rumson.

I believe Arcola, the original Arcola, was a Barker design.

Yes, it sounds like Barker was involved in the construction process, and particularly the process of constructing bunkers, much as he had done at Garden City.   He left Garden City and became pro at Rumson in April, 1911.  

The strange thing is that Travis's magazine, American Golfer, reported in May 1909 that Barker had laid out a fine course at Rumson.   Frankly, I think Travis was trying to help his friend Barker get started in the design field at the time and likely had something to do with Barker getting the pro job there.

Yes, Barker was commissioned to design Arcola CC in September, 1909 at the rate of $25 a day.   The course had a soft opening in October 1911 with a member's tournament before opening for real May 4th, 1912.

I'm relatively familiar with Barker's design at Arcola given that I've viewed his preliminary designs/drawings/routing, aerials and ground level photos taken of the course.
