Yesterday was St Andrews Day (the 30th), but I do not remember any mention of it on GCA.com.

Whatever happened to basic courtesy, let alone common courtesy, I suppose it’s gone in the same direction as Course Etiquette. Not to worry guys I did ask St Andrews to show a litter tolerance towards the intolerant on this site .

As you are so clearly not interested I will advise you that we had a great day, albeit in the snow but with cars parked we still did justice to the name of St Andrew.

So what happened to Arbor Day?  Though with all the tree clearing initiatives to restore classic courses I don't think it's embraced as well on here.

I guess assuming St. Andrews is a golf course will get you in trouble on this site.

I was in one of the funkier old quarters of New Orleans Saturday evening when a St Andrews parade broke out.  There were even Rolling Elvises on little scooters. I didn't hear much golf talk but everybody seemed to be having a good time, brass band and all.

I think you are being more than a bit "cheeky" on this, especially as you scold a number of members who are NOT members of a religious group that believe in "Saints," the need to have special days for or worship them, and therefor have absolutely no reason whatsoever to partake in a celebration of this nature or even remember that it is "St. Andrews Day" in Scotland when they live more than an ocean away.

By the way, if it is such a special occasion, why did it take until 2006 for it to be declared a "bank holiday" and one in which banks are not required to close on. In fact, many don't... I think you need to scold those living around you in the old country before you choose to do those on GCA.com...

I think the Scots should concentrate more on Burns night (Jan 25th) as there is a whole host of tradition and celebration behind that... Make it a bank holiday and promote it worldwide...

In fact, the Irish now have Arthur Guinness Day as well... Into its second year and a roaring success... The Irish do know how to make a party out of nothing, I have to say...

St Andrews Day is hard for me to escape.  Our village church is nmaed for the patron Saint of Scotland and flies the colours each St Andrews Day.  However, I don't celebrate no protestant days.  I can recall one cheeky bugger trying to convince me to donate monthly to the church.  I calmly - explained that I am a Catholic.  He didn't see any reason why I couldn't continue to be a Catholic and give money to protestants.  He lost the argument and I kept my money.  The lack of separation between church and state is one of the things I hate most about living in England.

You take our game and mess with it, you copy our holes and reinstate them in land not fit for purpose, you ruin the top soil of our courses by the invention of carts which not only compacts the soil but has a major factor on wear. You try and make caddies redundant from the  game by introducing distance aids. Still not satisfied you go berserk for the need to hit long drives forcing some of our courses to be changes at terrible cost. So why not remember golf and St Andrews

The name of the Home of golf is St Andrews, just thought that some might want to raise a glass in his honour and celebrate the Ghosts of St Andrews.

May I suggest you get your facts right - the gutty was not invented by OTM - but it did allow the game to be played without the fear of the wet, be it rain water etc., killing a round. The featherie was known to change its shape once wet and had a very poor roll direction too.

As I keep saying I am not against technology as long as it is aimed at consistency of the equipment for the purpose of improving the game and certainly not for the vanity or self-glorification of the player

To win or reduce my score through the technology of my new equipment is a disgrace, yet willing knowing it will improve a players performance is nothing short of bloody cheating IMHO.

How far will you go to win? Win or lose, what is far more important is the enjoyment, and if that is lost in the search for victory, those victories in months & years to come will become meaningless.

You remind me of an Alcoholics Anonymous sponsor that has mistakenly wandered into a meeting of The Temperance Society.  We, as the teetotaling members of said group, have no idea why you're yelling at us to stay off the bottle.  I'd suggest you check your schedule, get the designated meeting space correct and start delivering your sermon to an audience deserving of your passionate delivery.  There have to be a couple forums out there you could join with names such as "You and Your Distance Finder, Friends for Life" or "Fire, The Wheel, Gunpowder, The Golf Cart:  A Lesson in Progress".

As one who lives in the American South, where the temp/humidity can often be 96^o/80% in the heat of summer, I wouldn't be playing golf here if it weren't for carts.  So I'm not the choir but walk whenever it's feasible.  Given the choice between riding and not playing, I'll ride.  But that's old news and does no good........
