I think it was the highest rated new course to make the list.

It should be perfect for Fazio, huge budget and a huge fee for him.  Has huge maintance costs and huge green fees.  Of course it's associated with a hotel/casino and only the guests of Beau Rivage can play it.

It's a very nice course, especially for the area......
The fairway bunkers are a little too penal for me, on most of them, there is little opportunity to play to the green from them, they are mostly of the pitch it out sideways varity.

I liked the par 3's, and the 18th was a strong finisher.......I thought it was a stronger test than Shadow Creek, just my opinion. It is a pretty nice piece of land.

Mark,

Have you played Squire Creek?  How do they compare?

Kyle I have played Squire Creek 5 or so times. Three of the rounds in competition when is top condition. If the two are comparable then FO is a mid level Fazio. Squire may be a bit better than mid level but only modestly so. Squire Creek is a very good Louisiana course but rather pedestrian in the bigger picture.

Kyle, I have not played Squire Creek....I have played a fair amount of Fazio courses and for me, this is one of the better ones I have played. I think it is a nice piece of land, and there are some very good holes out there, but again, some of the fairway bunkering is overly penal.

I do wonder how long this course is going to continue as a stay and play only resort course. Most of the casinos in this area are cutting jobs and budgets, it wouldnt surprise me to see this open up as a high end public, similar to what happened with Grand Bear down the road in Gulfport, in the not too distant future.

Fallen Oak is an outstanding course that has an interesting history given that it's opening was scheduled for the week after Hurricane Katrina and had to be delayed over a year.  The pictures shown above are of the 18th Hole (top) and the 1st Hole (bottom).  The opener is a really difficult, long par 5 that wraps around a creek that flows down the left side of the hole.  The second has an unusual front to back sloping green that works perfectly for it's location.  I agree with Mark that the short holes are excellent and stunning to look at without being overdone.  The thing I liked the most about Fallen Oak was the look of the bunkers, they were appealing to my eye and played great.

I just landed a nice client in Mississippi so I intend on making my pilgrimmage there soon. I would assume the fall is the best time to go?

As a Gulf Coast resident, I would recommend waiting for early October.

Although I suspect walking won't be an option at Fallen Oak, so it doesn't need to be cool and dry!  ;)

That's funny Bill, as my new client also suggested coming back in October.

Not funny, just realistic!

Let me know when you'll be there, the lead architect and I have talked about a visit sometime this year.  He's no longer in the business but lives here in Pensacola.

They do have a caddy program.  I'm not sure if that means they caddy or they forecaddy though.

A friend recently returned from a trip to Biloxi. He said that Fallen Oak is the best course among those he played in the area. Access is limited to guests of the Beau Rivage but since the other course that he was scheduled to play was closed, they accomodated his group.

I hade the great pleasure of playing Fallen Oak three times over the weekend, and I came away very, very impressed.  It's not a dazzling GC, nothing stunning visually, but a real beauty, set among the woodlands of the DeSoto National Forest.  Lots of elevation changes, some incredibly difficult (but beautiful) bunkering, tough greens, a sense of serenity...it was superb.

An aside:  My driver was busted upon arrival. Not only did they have a reasonable replacement waiting for me, but they had my club reshafted and back in my bag by the 16th hole.  Incredible service, and attentiion to detail.

I like the course and the property quite a bit. All around solid golf course, I can't think of any weak holes. As said the fairway bunkers are very penal, I only got in 1 (on 16 the par 5) and could do nothing more than advance a 9 iron. It's a fun place to go spend a day, limo ride from Beau Rivage, the food is good, the bloody mary was awesome. They have forecaddies, mine wasn't very good but oh well. I don't know if they allow walking but it seemed very walkable.

I played Fallen Oak earlier this year and enjoyed it very much, especially the closing stretch of 15-18.  I liked the bunkers and while they are deep and if you get near the edge can be quite a challenge (difficult bunkers-what a concept!), I did not view them as overly penal.  I also thought there was ample width in the fairways to encourage various angles into the greens.  I played on a day after considerable rain and the fairways and greens were quite firm, the rough not so much.

The course is easily walkable ( I walked and carried my bag) , with the only long transition being from 9 green to 10 tee.

Service, ambiance, food and beverage are top notch as well.

Nice! Those are the type of things that can make a visit especially memorable. Places, companies, etc have everything to gain by putting great people in their employ.

The day I played it had flooded the day before, so much that Grand Bear and The Oaks were closed, but we were off the path. It should also be noted that my afternoon cart partner was Mayhugh so that kicks it up a notch.

Paul, I have not played there yet. Everyone who has really liked it. Those that have a fair number of Fazios under their belt put it high up the list.

Posted by: Sam Morrow   They have forecaddies, mine wasn't very good but oh well.

My forecaddie was very good...as a player.  Southern Miss grad, who holds the Fallen Oak course record of 66 from the tips (7,500 yards!)

Now that said---I was 10 shots better without him on day #2, just a few shots over par, but that was pure coincidence....just hit the ball much better the second time around....

My forecaddie spent the entire round telling me how good he was, I made back to back birdies at 6 and 7, I walk off the green and he told me he did the samething the other day. I didn't care. Of course I once had a forecaddie at Redstone talking about how much better his game was mine. He said he was a 6 handicap, I had just shot about 75 from the tournament tees, I don't need my forcaddie telling me this.

This is when you DON'T tip and tell them why!  I really hate that!
