You're right, Shivas. So good in fact that I almost can't believe it wasn't choreographed.

Like a perfect jazz solo, it spins out and develops so effortlessly, and ends so so fully-formed and so right, that it's hard to conceive of it being a spontaneous creation.

But it is (and was).

All the more reason, perhaps, to put our faith in the possibility and promise of spontaneous creation....

Like a handful of other great sports stories does everyone remember where they were when the "bear came out of hibernation"?

I was a senior in college, only occasionally went out and hacked a round with some buddies and NEVER watched televised golf.  I was alone that afternoon at my apartment and before heading out to meet folks to complete some project clicked over early in the broadcast.  Needless to say I was signifcantly late.  No way could I turn it off and even then I knew I had watched something truly special.

Ah, Dan, yes - the (inevitable) yang to the ying that is spontaneous creation; its dark side, its shadow.  Imagine if I'd been in the booth with Weiskopf and Nance? I would've ruined the moment with my unneccessary (but inevitable?) beard pulling.

I hope it can be done.  Earlier this year they broadcast a Shell's WWOG from 1966 at Pebble (Nicklaus vs Snead) that had been remastered in HD.  Surely a CBS broadcast from 1986 can be improved.  Though it would be OK if they blurred out the patrons' clothing a bit.

No love for the 1996 Masters?  I love watching the highlights from that one.  Obviously everybody remembers Norman's collapse, but Faldo puts on an absolute clinic, he does not miss a shot the entire round.  Favorite point is in the 13th fairway when Faldo is about to swing...but suddenly backs away to ahhhs from the crowd.  He switches clubs and then rifles one to the center of the green.

No love for train wrecks.  As great as Faldo's shot was on 13, I've seen it enough.  I actually enjoy seeing Fred Couples' "oh baby" shot to 13 a bit more.  Different dynamic, but more fun to watch (and hear...impact sound of Couples' shot was absolutely perfect).

YES SIR! Some great broadcasting to match the golf. First heard the phrase sneaky long as Ben Wright described a much younger Tom Kite.Will have to watch this. Hopefully Bob Huntley will chime in-I thuoght he spent time with friend Nick Price who shot 63 on Saturday and almost had 62 but narrowly missed on18. The pinnacle of majors in my life following golf.

I know I mentioned this before on GCA but the Search Function doesn't seem to be functioning that well of late.

Back in 1986 I got a call from Denis Watson inviting me to that years Masters Tournament. The Rhodesian Mafia of Denis, Nick Price, David Leadbetter, Reg Bennett and myself shared a house near to the course.

The weather on Thursday was not very nice and Friday was somewhat worse. Denis missed the cut and Nick made it by a shot. On Saturday the weather had improved and the group following Nick, was Sue, his wife, Bennett, Leadbetter, me and Jim Griggs who was a friend of Joey Sindelar, the other pro in the pairing. There was one other fellow in tow who didnt say much but I heard later he had bet a bundle on Price.  

The six of us walked up to the first tee and Nick promptly bogied the hole.  He went on to shoot 33 on the front and 30 on the back. You can imagine the scene later in the round when he lipped out for a 62; there must have been over twenty thousand patrons cheering and clapping. An unbelievable round of golf.

Many, many years later I was introduced to a fellow member of MPCC for the first time on the first hole of The Dunes. We got chatting. He reminded me that he was with us that memorable Saturday in April of '86. I stuttered and said  Oh yes I remember" which I didn't, it was of course Jim Griggs.

        Thanks  for sharing the Nick Price story-certainly one of the greatest rounds in major championship golf. I can recall watching him at Butler National in the Western Open during the 1980's and his ball striking was just in a different league from his peers. When the putter was working for Nick the low numbers were most impressive. It is an interesting point to note the high caliber of players from Rhodesia during that time frame.                                                         Wish you well,  Jack

Of course Pebble is Pebble. It's going to be an awesome week. I've had some success here. I'd say, over the course of 25 years, it's probably been below average on my curve as it relates to success and paycheck but, as it relates to enjoyment, it's top notch. Plus, two of the most important people in my life are Jim and Gail Griggs, who sponsored me when I first tried to make it on the PGA TOUR. One of their homes is right here near the golf course between the range and the clubhouse. Mike Hulbert, Davis Love III and I have stayed with Jim and Gail for years and years. That's a huge part of the trip is spending time with friends.

Even though Jim sponsored me in the early 1980s and helped me make it on the TOUR, it wasn't just the money with Jim. It was the life lessons and after that, it was the friendship. We've had so many laughs and so many serious talks. As soon as I became a friend of Jim's, Mike Hulbert was in the mix because he and I grew up together and everyone falls in love with Michael, he's such a funny guy.

Then an incredibly sad but meaningful thing took place. Davis Love III had become friends with Michael and I when he came out on TOUR -- that's probably one the things he might regret the most, hanging with Michael and I (just kidding). Seriously, though, he had known Jim Griggs for just a year or two when Davis' dad was killed in a plane accident. And Davis, if I remember right, was in Hawaii at the time and Davis flew back to San Francisco commercial. At the time, Jim Griggs had a plane and he picked him up and flew with him all night to get back to Georgia. Obviously, they had a bonding experience on that flight. A brutally tough one but an incredibly memorable one.

He's a lifelong friend of so many TOUR guys and Jim also served as chairman of the Golf Course Properties board for years. He's one of the most giving people and a friend of golf plus he has an extraordinary wife as well. It's been a great friendship and this tournament means so much to us because of us bunking here and driving him crazy for a week. He's one of those fun guys who has a few residences and they happen to be where we play tournaments so we bother him several times a year.

I can verify -- on my trip to Scotland, I was in St. Andrews the week before the Open in '99 at Carnoustie, and many of the competitors were staying in St. Andrews and taking the hovercraft over to Carnoustie. After walking around The Old Course, I stopped in at the Dunvegan for an ale, and who should I run into -- all by himself, just having a beer at the bar -- but Nick Price. We had a brief chat; couldn't have been nicer. I was impressed that someone still very near the top of his game, well-known to golf fans, wouldn't be hiding out in his hotel, or surrounded by handlers and agents and whatnot. Just a guy having a beer.

I'd go with the 1960 U. S. Open:

Palmer drives the first green in the final round.
Palmer comes back from a 7 stroke deficit with a closing 65 - then the lowest final round score in U. S. Open history.
Hogan hits the first THIRTY-FOUR greens in regulation on the final day.  THIRTY FREAKING FOUR IN A ROW!
The 47 years old Hogan is tied with Palmer as he stands in the 71st fairway and the 21 years old amateur Jack Nicklaus, playing with Hogan, is only one stroke back.
Hogan in the twilight of his career +  Palmer at the apex of his career + Nicklaus in the infancy of his career.

I was a pledge in a college fraternity and a friend and I skipped out on some required event to watch the final round.  I assumed we would tortured for the decision but the actives were so baffled by skipping out on an event to watch golf that it was not a problem at all.
