86 Masters on TV 7 EST Tonight
« on: November 15, 2010, 05:21:01 PM »
I just happened to check the Golf Channel schedule a few minutes ago.
Thought you'd want to know.

They are also showing no less than FOURTEEN episodes of Hank Haney's celebrity thing with Charles Barkley and Ray Romano this week.  I truly do not get the programmers there.
Enjoy the very, very brief moment of quality programming.

Like a handful of other great sports stories does everyone remember where they were when the "bear came out of hibernation"?

YES SIR! Some great broadcasting to match the golf. First heard the phrase sneaky long as Ben Wright described a much younger Tom Kite. Will have to watch this. Hopefully Bob Huntley will chime in-I thuoght he spent time with friend Nick Price who shot 63 on Saturday and almost had 62 but narrowly missed on18. The pinnacle of majors in my life following golf.

Price's putt for 62 was the most brutal lip-out I have ever seen.  Seems like the golf gods won't allow a 62.....

Well, yes.  When Seve tees off on #15, look for the brown haired 16 year old standing next to the big blond guy in red with the massive gold watch ;D

Great day and I got to spend it with my high school golf coach. He was from Ohio and just a little excited that day!

Just thinking but there must have been between 35-40 eventual total majors amongst the front runners at the 1986 Masters. Jack, Watson, Norman,Seve,Kite, Crenshaw, Lyle, Pavin , Price etc.  What a leaderboard!

I've probably seen this telecast 15 times and it never get's old.

During Norman's playing career I found myself being very symphatetic to his struggles. Today, I don't look back at Norman's career with much sympathy when his entire playing career is put in perspective and the passage of time. He had a great career.

It was an unbelievable leaderboard, and it made Nicklaus' win that much more special.  Here are all of the best players in the world at the time, and the "washed-up" Nicklaus fires a 30 on the back nine and beats them all!

Also, three of the most painful shots in golf history are:

1) Seve's second shot into 15.
2) Norman's second shot into 18.
3) Kite's birdie putt on 18.

Thankfully you must have been confused.  However I was wearing navy pants that were most likely flammable.  :o

One of the greatest memories of my youth.  I have since, on separate occassions, had the chance to sit over drinks or dinner and discuss the day with Nicklaus, Jackie Nicklaus, Ben Wright, Jim Nantz, Ken Venturi and Frank Chirkinian.  They all commented as if it were an event that moved them personally.  Venturi said he was in tears and could barely speak.  Wright talked about his interaction with Nicklaus going from 15 to 16 and Jackie talked about realizing how great his father really must be as he hit his shot on 16, Jackie saying be the club and his father picking up the tee and looking at him saying....it is.  Great stuff.

And Weiskopf answering Nance: "If I knew the way he thought, I would have won this tournament."  And then as Jack backs away for a moment, Weiskopf adds: "He's thinking, Jack, make the swing you're capable of making....Your destiny is right here".

The beauty of this one-time rival, Weiskopf, having the grace and geneoristy to actually FRAME and ADD TO Jack's historic moment.... unbelievably good television.

It's always a fun tournament to watch as a rerun and I did catch a good chunk of it last night as well.

Just as much as I see Jack's win I see Seve totally blowing the tournament...his 2nd on 15 makes my toes curl and that nasty 3-putt isn't much better!

2311 Bryant Avenue South
Minneapolis, Minnesota

Watching on a 13-inch Sony Trinitron, with a rabbit-ears antenna. Now in our basement.

Recording on a Sony Betamax. Still in our entertainment center -- but now inoperable.

Didn't get great reception at 2311 Bryant.

The tape (now transferred to VHS) is imperfect -- but it takes me back. Reminds me where I was. Reminds me where we were.

And the golf (not to mention the telecast) was perfect.

Good stuff Jeff.  Must be some great memories.

A leaderboard of great players, who mostly choked at the end.  Seve hits into the water at 15.  Norman half-shanks his approach at the 72nd.

Jack shot one of the great final nine's of all time.  Had me on the edge of my seat the last two hours or so.  But did anyone else mount a charge?  Seems like they mostly fell apart.  I kinda think Tiger faced tougher competition against Bob May in the 2001 (?) PGA than Jack did that day.

One thing I noticed this time (probably my 100th viewing) was on Kite's eagle putt on #13, Seve is midway up the putting line in front of Kite and he takes a couple of practice strokes while Kite is addressing the ball and taking his putt.   Don't usually see that sort of movement in a player's line of sight.

You got that right.  I noticed it a long time ago.  Seve was an expert at that sort of thing.  Coughing at the precise right time, jingling change, stuff like that.  He immediately gets in Kite's bubble right after that painful miss on the 18th green if you watch it again.  Kite hated him.  Tiger plays little games as well.  I seriously disdain that sort of smallness.
Ben Wright was one of the very best golf broadcasters.  I find it interesting they thought it was ok to take a mans career away from him for off the record comments.

"That has always been the best-choreographed piece of live announcing I've ever seen"

You're right, Shivas. So good in fact that I almost can't believe it wasn't choreographed.

Like a perfect jazz solo, it spins out and develops so effortlessly, and ends so so fully-formed and so right, that it's hard to conceive of it being a spontaneous creation.

But it is (and was).

All the more reason, perhaps, to put our faith in the possibility and promise of spontaneous creation....
