...for winning Golf Digest's Armchair Architect Competition. The task, select a real piece of land using Google earth and design a golf hole upon it. Nick chose a sandy seaside site near the tip of Cape Cod for his submission. The risk reward par 4 impressed judges Gil Hanse, Jeff Mingay, Todd Eckenrode and Trip Davis so much he was the unanimous winner. His reward, a round of golf with Pete Dye!

Here's a link to the article: http://www.golfdigest.com/magazine/2010-07/armchair-architect-contest

Well done Nick; we will expect a full report on your round with Pete!

That's fantastic!!!!! Congrats Nic...I'm assuming the contests that Charlie G. put on here must of given him some good practice.

congratulations Nick

I certainly wouldn't call this a flaw.  Its a single hole - how can it be a flaw?

One criticism comes from Davis: "I don't like his description of the green 'collecting' mis-hit shots. It would be better if a mis-hit is collected into an area around the green. But that's a minor flaw."

I liked the King submission.
Any relation Dan?

18 point underdogs!!!!!  Congratulations Nick.

Haha.  I was waiting for someone to chime in with that.  I'm sure there will be plenty of beverages consumed this Saturday on my part to soften the blow.

Well done Nick; we will expect a full report on your round with Pete!

My wife will be coming as well, and will likely be the designated camera (wo)man.  I'm sure there will be plenty of stories.  I'm really looking forward to the experience with Pete...and Alice.

It depends on the season and whenever Pete and Alice get a break.  According to a recent thread on this site (forgot which one), it appears he is still down at Kiawah working on revisions for the PGA.

Ron is working on setting a date.  If its this winter it will likely be in Florida (Sawgrass?)  If spring or summer, it will likely be in Indiana (Crooked Stick???  French Lick???).

Congratulations

Alex.  None taken.  A lot more time was put into this competition, both from a site research and design perpspective (not a knock on the GCA competition, i just had more time for the GD competition  ;))

Did anyone else from GCA submit for this?  Just curious.  I did not recognize any of the usernames that other entrants were using in the SketchUp warehouse.

Nick - congratulations.  How much ground did you anticipate moving around on this hole, especially around the green?  Looksed "minimalist" to me.

Matt, no earth was moved to create this hole...and i'm not exaggerating or just saying that.  The natural ravine between the tees and fairway was there.  The corridor adjacent to the cliffs where the fairway sits was there.  The mound short of the green that creates the visual penalty for conservative drives was there.  Even the perched table where the green sits was there.  This site was itching for a golf hole, and its the reason I chose it over others in the area!

While I welcome criticism regarding the design, I tend to disagree with Tripp Davis's comment about adding a collection area short left of the green given my approach to move nothing on the site.  To create a collection area I would have had to shift the green left of its current location, cutting earth to make the collection area and filling to the left of the to green pad.  While I know its common to move earth like this, I felt it more appropriate to leave the green site as was submitted.  Shifting the green left would also have softened the visual penalty for an approach that was played after a conservative drive short of the fairway bunkers.

Coordinates for Site (Can Be Found Easily on Google Earth)
42° 02’ 54.467” N
70° 04’ 32.03” W

A perspective of the existing site and the proposed hole from the same angle are below for comparison.  The scales are slightly off, but i did my best to get them as close as possible.

Jeff, Like Phil said earlier, smart people come from Penn State  ;D

After viewing the entries following the deadline, I thought your entry was the one to beat!  Awesome submission.  Did you submit anything to supplement the SketchUp model?  Are you from California?  How did you pick the site?
