Tom

The GD Panelists are given a list of best new contenders each year together with a list of assigned courses in their areas. To be considered, each new course is required to have a minimum number of reviews. The purpose of assignments is to assure the minimum number of evaluations are submitted. These evaluations take place during a window of time each summer. The evaluations are also used for "Top 100" and "Best in State" which are published every other year. Panelists can rate only courses under consideration for best in state or best new. However they can rate any or all courses under consideration.

Just heard something about another potential candidate in my area that I did not know much about.

Anyone heard of Briar Creek (?I think?) near Kiawah?  If so what do you know?  Is it open?

Someone mentioned it to me and thought it was a new private club done by Rees Jones.

Again, Does anyone know more about it?

Turboe:

I have a copy of  a press release from back in January, 2001.

It says/claims:

The club's name is The Golf Club at Briar's Creek and is located on John's Island with views of Briar's Creek and the Kiawah River.  It will be "a pure, classic, world-class golf course" and "a first-class, private, national golf retreat".

Rees is the architect and it was due to open around
Thanksgiving.

I have no first-hand knowledge and can not vouch for the accuracy of the press release.

I just spoke to the marketing person for the course this morning telling her about the GCA postings on Briar's Creek.  I'm sure she'll be posting soon to give you info on the course.  I spoke to a number of the TV sports people who've played in (during a media day) and they all absolutely loved it...  A classic Lowcountry layout...

Good to hear.

Is it fairly easy to find on the drive out to Kiawah through Johns Island?

Not at all, from what I hear.  You access the site from an unmarked dirt road off of River Road, not Bohicket...  Without specific directions, it would be nearly impossible to find (talk about private!!!).  Not like that lame Taco Bell ad with the Gen-X slacker jumping the wall.  Turn your hat around and get a job!

I really hope that Friar's Head is top of the list.  It's as good as anything I have ever seen and watching it evolve has been a wonderful experience.   :o

I've walked it a bunch and for my money I prefer it to just about anything that I have played in the Metropolitan area(big statement, I know).  I realize that it's hard to speak about a course until you have played it but I promise other readers that FH is something very special.   :)

As for the Bridge, I've played it 3 times now and I'd be surprised if it made it on the 2002 list.

Just my humble opinion!  Happy New Year to all.  What a great website.   :D

By the way anyone know anything about a course called Jefferson Landing on the New River?  It is either in Northern NC or Southwestern VA.  I was driving up 77 the other day north of Statesville, and saw some billboard for it.

Is it new?

What is the story on it?

I would love to hear.

Daryl,
Jefferson Landing is a 10-year-old resort in the NW NC mountains not too far (20 minutes?) from Blowing Rock/Boone.  I found out about it when my sister-in-law bought a cabin in those parts and I was checking where to play when there.  Never had a chance to get there, and they've moved and sold the cabin.  Designed by Larry Nelson/Dennis Lehmann, which means there's a good chance Jeff Brauer was a (probably big) part of it.

Thanks Scott,

They must be making a renewed attempt at pushing real estate on the coures/development.  I had never heard of it, and all of the sudden I saw these billboards north of Statesville on I77.  I figured it must be another new project.

After seeing FH all summer long, it would an all out shame if it wasn't "THE BEST NEW PRIVATE." It would be in the same catagory as Oregon not playing Miami for the National Championship at the Rose Bowl.  The question is, what year will it win...2002 or 2003...time will tell

To briefly supplement information about the GolfDigest "new" course ranking system,  a course must receive a minimum of ten (10) rankings to be eligible for consideration. Although panelists fill in a ranking for "condition" (from 1-10, with decimal points), "condition" does not count for ranking of new courses.  In 2001, about 250 courses were nominated for consideration (either by the architect and/or by the course), about 200 of which were public (either affordable or upscale) and about 50 of which were private.

In John Connely's post on Orlando and PGA show courses we also mentioned Victoria Hills in Delan.  I have heard great things about this new course.

Also if you are reading John, it is a little outside your Orlando area, but have you heard anything about a new course in the works at Hammock Dunes.  Not Ocean Hammock I am aware of that.  But I heard about another course at Hammock Dunes may either be in the construction phase or planning stage.  I dont know I just heard something in passing.

If anyone knows more let me know.

Also I hear this week that there is another course basically done at Golden Ocalla that is just sitting and maturing a little more.  I was suprised as I have seen many people post about the renovations to Golden Ocalla, but this was the first I had heard about a second 18 basicly opening quite soon.  Any truth to this?

Turbs:

Victoria Hills is very good.

I have heard of more work in Palm Coast.  I believe Jack Nicklaus.

You are a bit off on Golden Ocala.  The course has been closed for 20 months, which is why one of my initial posts on this thread nominates it for BEST NEW - 2002.  The new owner is a trucking magnate from somewhere like Ohio.  He is finishing the project.  Wonderful when you consider it has been there for about 15 years.  One of the most enjoyable rounds of golf anywhere.  Tommyknockers can squawk all he wants, but anyone willing to give the place a chance will like it.

There is no new course.  They put in the wall on the Road Hole.  It follows the line of the golf car path.  Remember how stupid it looked taking a big angular break?  It was supposed to be the wall without having a wall.

They also put the necessary money in to finish the replica of #9 Muirfield.  Thank God!  It was pointless.

I am dying to get up there, but they weren't ready for me last month.  It'll be a while for me now, but I might try Prez Day.  King Day is out as I'll have a newborn.

This is much different than TOUR 18 or Royal Links and I can tell anyone why if they care.  If you haven't seen it and want to disparage it you're being childish.

John,

That is good, I had heard much of what you said about Golden Ocalla.  This guy has supposedly sunk a bunch of money into the place.  I guess the days of the dirt parking lot and a trailer for a clubhouse are long gone (but not forgotten for those of us who have been there).  I heard  the new clubhouse is 70,000 sq ft.  (quite a change).

And I understand houses on lots are starting at $600,000 and going up from there!!! That blows me away considering what that area used to be like.  Nothing wrong with it, but it didnt seem like a place to build a million dollar house.

Again I just heard from a pretty reliable source something about a second course there, so I was wondering what you had heard.  I know how you feel about the place so I wanted to mention it.  Again this person knew of the work done to the original course, and still thinks that there is an additional 18 nearly done.  Maybe it is someone else doing a seperate project up in that area or something.

Guess I will have to figure out a road trip up there again soon, it has been a few years.

That is a new one on me.  I have spoken to Joe Donnelly a few times on the phone and he never mentioned it.

New clubhouse, re-grassed, finished a few of the holes, etc..., but no new course mentioned.

I, too, have heard of the level of the project.  Golden Ocala is going to have a hard time.  The CC of Ocala is a great golf course with enormous homes around it... you wonder how much of a market there is for that price point.

John,

You are probably right on the second course.  That is why I wanted to mention it to you, I figured you would know.  I was surprised, because the contact who mentioned it to me is usually pretty on top of things.

Then again maybe I got my messages crossed too, that is entirely possible as well.  Maybe he was talking about another course up there in that area...  What ever happened with the possibility of the second 18 at El Diablo GC?  I know they were talking originally about a second course on the property there.  Has anything more ever come of that?

We hope The Glen Club in Glenview, Illinois will be considered.  Steve Lesnik and Mike Keiser hired Fazio to design it on the site of the formal Glenview Naval Air Station.  I'll spare you my opinion and details, other than, on my visits back from Bandon, it was very interesting to see what Fazio did with a site covered by runways.  It had 3' of elevation when they started and now has 30' in a couple places, etc/.  Sports Illustrated included it in their recent "top 10 new."  We opened July 15, 2001.   Thanks, Josh.
