One pound in 1932 is also worth 199.00 today when using average earnings as a yardstick. That's a huge increase of the per round price.

The numbers I cited came from a Cybergolf article by Blaine Newnham, who 's been a sportswriter for 50 years or so. Perhaps the '72 open, coupled with the inflation of the mid/late '70s caused them to really inflate the price by the time you played.
