Sand Greens
« on: February 24, 2002, 06:32:38 AM »
I have just finished reading Brad Klein's superb book "Discovering Donald Ross".  He mentions the conversion of Pinehurst No. 2 from sand greens to grass in 1935.  Is anyone aware of any other notable courses that initially had sand greens?

The Old Course at St Andrews is sort of an example.  While many of the greens there were natural and always had turf on them, #6's green consisted of hardened sand and random sprigs of heather, and #7's green consisted of a mixture of that and shells.  Hense, #6's name, Heathery, and the bunker in front of #7's green, Shell Bunker.  When Old Tom Morris became custodian of the links, he turfed them, probably using sod, as opposed to seeding.  In a few short years after his work, the greens were of the same quality of the other greens on the course.

Ed:

Orono GC in Minnesota advertises that they were the first course in the state with grass greens.  Any club that pre-dates them must have had sand.

Speaking of Orono, it is a community near Lake Minnetonka.  Minnetonka HS is where Adam Boone went to school.  MY CONDOLENCES on what must be a trying campaign.

Speaking of Adam Boone... we actually would take him back.  The Gophers present line-up is a very strong front line with a turnover-prone backcourt.  The best of what we have at guard will run out of eligibility.

Saw your name - might be the first time I ever saw it on the site - and felt compelled to offer my wishes for a recovery.  Lots of McDonald's guys coming in next year, so I doubt the ugly blue stay down long.  Hope to see you soon.  Can't make Pinehurst, but am hoping to get to SC in the Fall.

John

Good to hear from you.  I'm sorry I won't see you in March.
It's been an awful year with the Tar Heels.  Unfortunately, Adam is part of the problem although he is a fine young man.

Fear not, young man.  Help is on its way.  Unless the recruiting people are wrong, UNC has a heck of a class.  I think it even includes Ray Felton, a great story from a very small town.

UNC in 2003.

Brad's outing to Pinehurst sold out, but was open to the public.

Not sure what you're thinking of, but there's a GW Raters' Cup in Pinehurst March 24-27, and if Cirba is coming, we may have a group of us play Tobacco Road on Saturday, the 23rd.

Cirba screwed up - BIG TIME!!

He procrastinated, assuming that he could wait until the 22nd (last day) to register, only to be informed on the 21st that it was SOLD out.
