Someone please remind me how to post pictures.  Please keep it simple!

Lester

The simplest way to go about it if you don't plan to do it with any frequency is to email the pictures to someone that already knows how so you don't have to do it yourself.

If it isn't worth the time for you learn how to do it, then I, or probably any number of folks participating on this thread, would be happy to do it for you.

Great to hear that the Macdonald/Raynor style of design is becoming popular in the modern day.  I for one am a huge fan of the idea of template holes as presented in different settings.  Hopefully there will be no shortage of Dragon's Teeth at Contentment GC!

What do you mean when you say that "the Donald Ross Society did that dirty work?"
Please read this article from the year Black Creek was being built and draw your own conclusions:

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/vault/article/magazine/MAG1016180/index.htm

My conclusion is that the Donald Ross Society made no claims at all suggesting that Old Macdonald was somehow ripping off Black Creek.  That was what confused me about your message.

Michael Fay's feelings towards Brian Silva are unfortunate, but I do not think that the society has been bad for golf architecture in general.  Do you?

Politely:  I think you missed the context of my questions.  They were not questions I had, but rather questions that would arise following the logic behind the "template" question.

Mayhugh style: you might want to read the whole thread before isolating my comments, you damn fool. ;D

And I answered those questions that might arise.  Where is the problem?

I suppose the "Mayhugh style" reply is meant to be humorous, but doesn't apply here as there was nothing wrong with the reply that I made.

Yes, a society that adds the biological and technological distinctiveness of individual entities to their own eventually destroys the basis for the society.

John,

Lest there be any confusion, I read your post as addressing me directly as if those questions were mine and were serious questions.  I thus read a tone to your post that you have previously taken towards those who you might think are questioning the legitimacy of the CBM philosophy vis-a-vis the use of the word "template."

Since I wasnt offended by this perceived tone because I love you for who you are, I thought it'd be fun to come up with "Mayhugh Style" kind of like "Animal Style" from the secret menu at in-and-out burger.

Now that I know you weren't addressing me but rather some hypothetical questions that were not intended to be answered, I apologize for the miscommunication.

Jason,
In the future I will follow your example and try to make sure that my responses to posters that I disagree with are conciliatory.

John,
Sorry, but I don't follow.

Is the course as steep as Ballyhack? It is hard to tell from the photos how steep the terrain is.

Mark,

There are portions as steep as Ballyhack but more of it is rolling and less "sidehill".  Wher it is steep we are mostly playing down.  The side walls of the property are very steep but we are not using those.  Ballyhack is more compressed because the total acreage there is 370.  The total acreage of Contenment is now over 800.

As an update, Contentment is making progress and may start construction sooner than we think.  I will keep you posted as I would definitely like to add Contentment to Toms list of "course under construction" list.  Watch your radar!

JC,

Stay in touch, we may put you to work clearing briars!

Lester

Consider my offer extended.

JC says "Please DO throw me in the briar patch!"

I haven't seen Old Mac yet (March and the Kings Putter can't get here too soon!). and look forward to seeing Contentment some time in the future.  So I've only played CBM/Raynors from the past, but I absolutely loved every minute of it.

I don't see these "tribute" courses as faithful replicas constructed with a great deal of earth moving, I see them built by GCA's who spend a lot of time studying the site and find holes that are evocative of the templates rather than replicas.   That's what I'm looking forward to seeing at Bandon and one day in Carolina.

The final permits should be recieved in the next 60 days.  Slow but good process so far.  Agencies are embracing the project and we still hope to break ground before the end of the year.

Jay,

Judging by the length of time it is going to take to clear (approximately 120 acres) and buils our lake (5 acres) it is unlikely that we would open in 2012.

Also, the NCDNR regulations dealing with land disturbance in areas that contain "trout stream buffers" only allows for 20 acres of disturbed ground at any one time.  Those areas must be PHASED in such a way that you build entire holes and stabilize them before moving on.  Wehave 3 such areas which make up portions of 5 or 6 holes.  This makes a 2012 opening very difficult so we decided to take the 22 month approach.

Bill,

As you will eventually learn, I have very little patience!

I will admit that in the last 24 years and 100 projects I have started to learn and accept those things I can't change.  I still admire those with true patience.  I think my years in the military actually prevented my learning patience because I was always in a fairly high speed environment.

With the assistance of some very special people around me I am actually beginning to "mellow" accordingly and have recently begun to attend meetings with bureaucrats again.  Surrounding myselfwith the right people has made me more tollerant and patient, but I still have a long way to go.

Lester--

Where exactly in or near Elkin is Contentment located?  No one up at the Gap knew anything about it when I was up there in June.  There's some really nice property in that neck of the woods, it will be interesting to see how it all works.
