First off congrats to Paul and all the other members at CH.

I too am surprised that it was listed as the best hole.  I was expecting Sahara or something from the Dunes course.  I haven't played it yet, but Mike's explanation of his time their does have me intrigued.

I am also of the belief that the best golf holes bring forward a wide range of emotions and opinions.  Obviously this hole fits the bill there.

Apparently, one man's "objectivity" is another man's "love" or "overbearing cheerleading."

Jud,

Given Whitten's recent rant regarding the lack of anything truly new in the world of golf architecture, this hole apparently caught his eye in that regard. Couple that with his vocalized criticism (maybe the wrong word) of template holes and we shouldn't be surprised that he didn't turn to Old Mac for "Hole of the Year". Whether or not #9 at CH is the best hole of the year...I don't know, but Whitten apparently found it to be the most unique.

>I wish every club could have a member like Paul.  Based on his comments about Beverly which proved to be nothing but true if not understated, I have no reason to doubt a word he has said.

>I will say that based on me having played neither course I would estimate Paul to be worth a minimum .5 bump in a Golfweek rating only due to the fact that Ballyhack came in at 6.3 next to Chicago Highlands 6.8.

John:

Thank you for the kind words.   :)

Seems to me that Whitten needs to bone up on his GCA. Seems he has picked a MacDonald template hole as "most unique". Seems this is MacDonald's Knoll hole patterned after the 4th at Scotscraig in Scotland.

Garland,
Here's Scotscraig's 'Knoll':

Here's the 9th at Chicago Highlands:

and it's description:
It's shaped like a volcano, up a steady rise from the tee to a hilltop green surrounded by slopes of tightly mowed turf. Blow it left, right, short or over the green, and the ball could roll 60 yards down. It's a giant chocolate drop of a hole, a pyramid of grass, the Iwo Jima of golf. As one who has steadfastly insisted he'd seen it all in golf design, I humbly beg for a mulligan.

They aren't similar at all. The green on a Knoll is not found after a steady rise from the tee to a hilltop green. That's easily seen in the photo of Scotscraig, as are all the other differences.

I feel like this has been done before....

Wish I could find a better angle, but hopefully you can see it.  :D

Joking aside this does seem like a really cool and innovative hole.
