Grumpy prick contribution:  what does this have to do with GCA?  Save this for Facebook...totes, LOLZ JKJK ;)))

At least make an effort to connect it to the topic, as in "What four clubs would you use at Oakmont and would your fascination with the course's missing trees be minimized or maximized by carrying so few clubs?"

Better now...who's next?

3 wood, 7 iron, wedge, putter. With those clubs most courses are not too bad to score normally.
A combination of whats good for golf and good for turf.

It proved the fact that the short game is MUCH more important than the long game.  My partner and I both picked clubs we could get in the fairway off the tee (3 Woods) and then picked the 2 clubs we use the most to get up and down: Lob Wedge and Putter for me and Sand Wedge and Putter for my partner. THe forth club we just picked one that we could use on almost all the Par 3s.

I would use the same clubs at Oakmont: 3 wood, 6 iron, Lob Wedge and Putter :-)

Slightly OT, but...

We played a one club event at Flossmoor a number of years ago. I took along a 5 iron. No putter allowed. Shot 43 on the front nine. Played with all 14 the next morning. Shot 43.

Seems like the other 13 are pretty expensive given their contribution!!

19 degree hybrid
5 iron
9 iron
Sand Wedge 56 degrees for putting, good chipping club

Played once in a 4 club two person team and you could use your partners clubs too.

I typically go with the same ones Gary.

I would go:

21 degree hybrid
6 iron
wedge
putter

At one of my old clubs there used to be a team game where teams of 5 players would be assembled. Each team was allowed a driver, a 3 iron, a 7 iron, a wedge and a putter and the team played the course in strict rotation, longest to shortest club, carrying on between holes, so if you tapped in with a wedge on one hole, the guy with the putter teed off on the next. A certain amount of strategy was required to avoid teeing off with wedges over water and playing bunker shots with driver.

3 wood
7 iron
56 degree wedge
putter

Though the iron I would choose would vary depending on the length of the course, particularly the one-shot and two-shot holes.
