Patrick is correct. Colt made two trips to N.America between 1911 and 1913. CH Alison came over as a partner in Colt & Alison in around 1920 and designed quite a few courses in the US and Canada throughout the 20's - in fact he had an office in Detroit - all those courses were designed by Alison. Milwaukee, CC of Detroit, Knollwood, North Shore, Kirtland, Burning Tree, Century or the old Sea Island - all reflect Alison's own distinctive or unique style, very different from Colts and anyone else for that matter. He liked to elevate his greens and plant very large bunkers well below the greens, creating the famous deep Alison bunkers - the deepness is more a product of the greens being raised so high. Same with his deep fairway bunkers - he liked to plant them below or against natural upslopes or build up the ground to create his own upslopes. He was also proficient in designing and building courses on marshes - Timber Point, Sea Island and Colony and around rivers Milwaukee, Kirtland and possibly Onieda.
