Hate or Love it?
« on: October 25, 2010, 04:10:57 PM »

This is one of the most unique holes in all of golf.No dirt moved ie minimalistic.Tee ball funnels to the hole from the right and left.Anticipation similar to many shots at NGLA.

You really need to research the history behind this hole first .

Did it really deserve a new thread, considering you gave us these thoughts already last week ?

A.  The picture does nothing to describe the hole.
B.  You didn't tell us where this is so we can't do our own research.
C.  What does "most unique" mean?

Until the above issues are addressed, I'll reserve comment.

I've played it once and that's enough.

Actually it was 3x, same weekend.  There was a hard wind from the left amplified by the Dune, and forom memory I lost at least 2 balls on the right hand dune as the ball hit a wall of wind and was swept away.

The starter in the club competiton told me I had to learn to hit a low 3i draw. Options?  None.

It's a freak show and once a decade would be fun.  there are hundreds of blind/quirky holes that are better than this.

Sven it's the 15th(? ;D) at Cruden Bay. Sanwiched between two cool quirky holes.

Tony:

Assumed as much as the original post was from Anthony.

Anthony:

What's the challenge?  Par 3, 4 or 5 (guessing 3 by the 3iron and sandwiched comments)?  Is the hole similar to 5 at Kingsley?  Can you see the green from the tee?  Is there elevation?  Big green or small green?

Help a brother out here, for those that haven't seen it you've given us zip to work with.

Can a hole with a sunken green really be described as ""No dirt moved ie minimalistic""  ???

I hate to come over the grammar bore, but I can't let this one go on any longer. Anthony, Sven is right - something can't be more or less unique. It either is or it isn't, the word doesn't admit of qualification. Very unique, most unique, more unique - all of these are INCORRECT ENGLISH! Call it more unusual if you like.

I'll echo what Tony said.  I have also played it 3 times.  Into a very strong wind (strong enough for Joe Fairey, who hits it further than I can dream, to describe the (wonderful) 13th as the hardest par 7 he had ever played).  It's a terrible hole.  No interest in the green, an almost impossible tee shot in those conditions, almost inevitably a lost ball if you miss left or right.  Yes, it's minimalist.  It's a poster boy for the importance of selecting the right place to lay out a hole and the fact that sometimes you need to move earth.  The irony, of course, is that a vast amount of earth WAS moved, to produce the ultra quirky bath tub green that Brian refers to above.  CB is a lovely course, with some brilliant holes.  Anthony's inability to see the weaknesses as well as the strengths is an eloquent commentary on the value of his opinion.
In June I will be riding the first three stages of this year's Tour de France route for charity.  630km (394 miles) in three days, with 7800m (25,600 feet) of climbing for the William Wates Memorial Trust (https://rideleloop.org/the-charity/) which supports underprivileged young people.

   Sven,

It is a blind par 3 180-200.In the photo you can see an aiming stick one fouth up the hill. The ideal shot is a draw around the hill.Over the hill the ball feeds toward the green. If you don't get the ball in the air than your in trouble. Most unique would mean demasiado in spanish...same concept.

Par 3, right?

I really wish my friend could better translate what he's saying to what he's typing. I've listened to him go on and on about Cruden Bay and this hole, but he hasn't articulated his thoughts with the written word very well here on GCA. Anthony - Remember, this isn't Twitter or Facebook. There are more than 140 characters allowed in your posts!

Tony,

A low hooking 3 iron, eh? No pressure there....!

Adam,

Please - go to the advanced search page, type in "most unique" and hit search. 14 pages of results using the words "most unique" together. Posts from a ton of different GCA members.  Anthony probably learned the term from reading this board!

Anthony,

I would love to learn more about the hole. Please do better in telling the group what it is that you love about 15 @ Cruden Bay.  I'll bet there are others who would agree with you.  I know TOP 100 GOLFER does.... http://top100golf.blogspot.com/2009/05/cruden-bay-golf-club.html

Here's a brief video from greenside...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3F-FUEcTtIY  In the video, the front of this green looks incredibly cool.

Cheers,

Eric

If you don't get the ball in the air than your in trouble.

Once again I find myself disagreeing with you, and if you look at what others have posted on this thread, you can see that some days, the last thing you want to do is put the ball in the air !

Growing up in the region, I have played this hole more times than I care to count, and it doesnt get any better over repeated plays.

And I know a lot of locals who also detest this hole, and would love to walk past it on the way to the 16th tee.

Can you imagine playing it every day ?

Anthony, how many times have you played the hole ?

Can this hole be attributed to Old Tom ?

I know what the centenary book says, but I play a lot of sunken greens that are defintely the hand of Archie Simpson.

Ithink that hill you have to hit over has alwas been there or did somebody put it there? It would have taken 500 vikings to build that hill.

I have played that hole many less opertunities than thow has participated. But that doesn't mean a thing.I've played Pebble Beach over 20 times but my opinions of the holes has no greater  value than a poster that has played it once.

Ignore what the video says, that is the green for the par 4 14th hole, not the par 3 15th .

Brain.....If you grew up there than why don't you like CB more. The course has wonderful intangibles. The view from the clubhouse is one of the best golf has to offer. The only caddys are members.Mine could have been your teacher even.He may be 5 foot tall, science teacher Jack Meoff.Plays everday and loves the place. The water, castle and village on hole 4 can't be found many places. There are reasons it is a top 100 course.

The 15th green, from Ran's review.

The tee is obviously on the right of the photo, around the hill , over the marker pole, and the bell !
