Born in England, Hoare became the head professional at Philadelphia Cricket Club in 1896.  He played in the U.S. Open during its early years, finishing 5th in the '97 event and winning the driving contest in 1899 with an effort of 269 yards.

Hoare was a man of many talents, including being regarded as an Turf Expert and a sought after Club Designer as well as a Golf Course Architect.  He was integral in the formation of the PGA of America and was considered to have known more golf professionals than anyone else in his day.  Hoare worked for MacGregor, Spalding and Wilson during his career, his clubs made by Spalding and Wilson being signature lines.
