Had the plesure of playing here the other day. Wow! Rained all night and only two spots on the course had standing water. It was soon gone. Conditions were tough (cool and windy with gusts up to 30mph).

What a landscape. Individual holes aside, the landscape at Shinnecock Hills (and clubhouse!) never ceases to amaze... in photos or in person.

It's amazing how much better NGLA and Shinnecock look and play with all the trees removed.

Thanks again Pat. I cannot imagine these places with more trees (excepting Westhampton). That they were there once seems so mistaken. What were they thinking?

It's my understanding that a tree management program will be instituted at Westhampton.

I love the name of the 8th hole, "Senility Ridge"

If you don't/can't hit your ball over that little ridge, your golfing future is behind you.

Does anyone know what type of grass has the reddish hue?  Is there much work in maintaining it as seen in the photos?  The expansiveness and color contrast are phenomenal.

Other than the bladed sand wedge on the Alps hole on Saturday, I played all three tracks without changing balls. I was fortunate to have a good driving weekend.

I have only walked the course during the US Open in 2004, but every time I see pictures I wonder whether it might be the best course on the planet...

Sean, for some of us it may be. I hope some day you get to play the course, it is amazing and I am sure you would absolutely love it. Is it better than Pine Valley? Or Augusta? Or Pebble? They are all a bit different and all are great and could be the greatest. To me, I am not sure what the greatest course in the world is but I do believe these are the greatest courses in the world and Shinnecock is very worthy of that view. An amazingly wonderful place!!

Pat,   I played Shinny about 4 weeks ago and felt that the tree removal was exceptional. While on the 15th tee,I commented to 2 fellow GCAers who played with me that more trees could be removed off to the left of the fairway- probably another 20 or 30 hardwoods. Felt the trees at NGLA and Sebonack were about right. The other track  we played, Garden City was very good but felt it could benefit from some deforesting internally back  in the corner of the property on 8,9,10. We all felt that it would be hard to travel away from LI in the Summer to play golf at other clubs- the depth and variety is unmatched elsewhere.
