The Dunhill - Ryder Cup fallout?
« on: October 07, 2010, 05:09:48 PM »
So we're playing on three of Scotland's Top 10 (5?) golf courses this weekend and not a single discussion? No coverage in the US?
Here's the old quick Q for those who've been lucky enough to play all three. How many plays out of Ten?

Me?
TOC - 3
KB - 3
C - 4

That took a while, but I think I'm happy.

You?

cheers,
F.

PS Posting here is such a pain, I'm less and less inclined to do it. Does anyone else get the 'bottom of the box bounce' effect? I couldn't see ANY of this last para to tpr! As you can tell! AND I CAN@TPREVIEW. :(

Marty,

First, yes, the bottom of the box bounce is a pain in the arse.  It simply can't be beyond fixing since no other site I visit with the same software has the problem.

Second, you're over-rating KB.  TOC 4, C 4, KB 2.

I thought this might be a thread about Westwood's calf at first!
In June I will be riding the first three stages of this year's Tour de France route for charity.  630km (394 miles) in three days, with 7800m (25,600 feet) of climbing for the William Wates Memorial Trust (https://rideleloop.org/the-charity/) which supports underprivileged young people.

Marty -

I saw a little of the Dunhill Cup on the Golf Channel (US) this morning. I think we are all suffering a little fatigue from the Ryder Cup, especially since it ended on Monday. Since the Open was at TOC just a few months ago, I am not sure how much more there is to say about it.

Since I've played neither Carnoustie or Kingbarns, I guess it would have to be TOC 7, New 1, Crail 1, Elie 1.   ;D

Uncle Bill!
You've been in this wee corner how many times? And you've NEVER got to KB or C? THAT is the single most surprising thing I've ever heard here - after TEP's TOC confession!!!!
cheers,

Believe or not, in my 19 visits to Scotland, I have yet to play TOC, Carnoustie or Kingsbarns, so I cannot offer a legitimate answer to your question! ;)

 :)

For me, it's something like TOC 7, Nasty 3, KB 0. Sorry, if I'm going that far, I want to see the real thing.

I'd probably have to modify that also to squeeze in a trip to NB.

I have played all three and if I had the chance again my ten plays would be broken down as follows:

6 @ TOC
3 @ Carnoustie
1 at Kingsbarns

Cheers boys!

I would play Carnasty once hoping for an ephiny.  I would play Kingsbarns twice if on a deal.  I would play TOC seven times just because I wouldn't likely get the opportunity to see it so often ever again.

Mac,

Interesting.  Given such an extreme opinion (do you really have no interest in playing Carnoustie?  If not, why not?), could you explain why you have formed it?

When the chips are down sorry KB, my heart is still at TOC followed by Carnoustie (after all it’s a game you want – right), I will not let a young buck take the podium, KB is still not run in properly IMHO, rather Anglo/American, but in time it may acquire the right accent.

Great Q, Mark! Mac, We'd genuinely love to hear your reasoning.

Ian,
THAT'S A MAGNIFICENT surname, may I say! Are you a 'Dee-Ell', or a 'Dal-Zeel'.

Kelly,
you're a great student of TOC. How much would you say it has influenced your work? Would you say it's the greatest thing you ever saw? Long live the Oblate Spheroid. GO BEARS!!!! ;D

Arbs,
you package whore, you! BTW, Free accoms chez us anytime! ;)

Melvyn,
incisive as always! Please give KB some space in your old heart of hearts. Try it, you'll like it. You may even learn to love it later. ;)

FBD.

PS Me and La Nance are planning on tomorrow afternoon in St A. Anyone else planning on a visit?

Kelly,
I'm just about in tears, cos I know exactly how you feel. Driving away from both CPC and PV I got exactly the same sensations. "That was the first and possibly last time I will see that golf course".

Quite the deep philosophical conundrum. Was it a great experience BECAUSE it may be the one and only time you'll see it OR DESPITE the same statement???

Zen Golf, indeed...

Never, never say never, yet I have too many mistresses who await once my back is back in full working order. My fetish when the opportunity presents itself is Walking. I must say that I have never been keen on barn conversions. ;)

KB must wait so its way down the list, but of late I feel a calling back to NB, its nearly family.

Enjoy St A

How does Carnoustie not make my “to play” list for courses in Scotland?

In short, I think it might be too difficult of a golf course for me to enjoy.  For context, currently I am a 9.4 handicap and I have never broken 80.  (Although I did score my first hole in one today!!!    :D).

How did I come up with the idea that it might be too difficult for me to enjoy?

Well, here is a tid-bit from my site about Carnoustie…

“Carnoustie is considered to be the most difficult course in the Open rotation and has earned the nickname "Car-nasty" for this reason.  A young Sergio Garcia ran into his mother’s arms in tears after missing the cut at Carnoustie and posting two rounds in the 80's.  In fact, there is a psychological term called "The Carnoustie Effect" which refers to the degree of mental anguish which is experienced when false and unrealistic expectations collide with reality.  I would say the 19 year old Sergio Garcia had a fairly bad case of the Carnousite Effect.  Now that I think of it, maybe Jean Van de Velde also felt this effect pretty intensely.”

And here are some snippets from Carnoustie’s website…

From Padraig Harrington, “There isn’t a player who didn’t find this course a test.”

From Ernie Els; “Its got length.  Its got great bunkering.  You’ve really got to have your wits about you to play this golf course.”

From Tiger Woods, “This golf course is hard.”

So, I think I need to get my game in better shape in order to fully appreciate Carnoustie.  And this is my goal for improving my game…to be able to play well enough to appreciate quality golf course architecture.

Maybe my next trip to Scotland I’ll give it a shot, but not this upcoming trip.  But, of course I’ve never played it or really even seen it…so maybe I am way off base.  That wouldn’t be the first time!!   :)

Nonsense, from the tees you'll be playing Carnoustie is not as hard as The Ocean Course, Bethpage Black or Torrey South. It the length that makes these courses brutes. Fortunately the Scots will not even allow you to loitter around the back tees, never mind play off them!
