Constellation TPC at Potomac
« on: October 05, 2010, 08:10:24 PM »
Just chatted with Finchem who told me he was bowled over by the comments from the senior players regarding TPC Potomac.  Langer reported it was the best course the Champ Tour plays and the best redo in all of golf.  The players were joking today at the first tee if they could even reach the beginning of the fairway....on one of the shorter par 4s.  Player after player coming in after their practice round said the course was both magnificient and simply relentless.  Let's see what the rest say over this weekend on the TV coverage.  JC

I can't wait to see this. The previous version of this course was my college team's home course and one that I played a million times.  From what I understand, the work they did out there was fantastic and, frankly, the place really needed it.

I'm pretty sure that admission to this event is free.

Some info about the first day from the tournament office.

First-Round Notes – Thursday, October 7, 2010

Weather: Mostly sunny and breezy with highs in the low-70s. Winds were from the W at 10-15 mph with gusts to 25 mph. Lift, clean and place rules were in effect.

Current Leaderboard: 1 – Tom Kite (67/-3); T2 – Michael Allen, Mark O’Meara & Joe Ozaki (68/-2); T5 – Jeff Sluman, Eduardo Romero, Russ Cochran, Loren Roberts, Trevor Dodds & David Peoples (70/E).

Only four players finished with rounds under par on Thursday. It was the fewest players under par in a round since only one player did so at the 2008 Senior British Open.

The field averaged 73.470 (+3.470), the highest first-round average in this event since 2001 when the average score was 74.273 (+2.273). That was when the event was held at the TPC Michigan in Dearborn. The first-round average on Thursday was also the highest score over par since the second round at this year’s Senior PGA Championship (75.987/+3.987). However, that field included 155 players in the first two rounds.

Only one of 18 holes did not have an average score over par and that was No. 9, a par-3 which averaged an even 3.000. The most difficult hole was No. 4 with an average score of 4.519 (+.519) followed by No. 1 at 4.416 (+.416). The toughest to birdie was No. 16. Only two players made birdies – Brad Bryant and Jim Rutledge.

Due to conditions on Thursday, the course was played at a length of 6,849 yards.

This marks the first time Tom Kite has held sole possession of the lead in a Champions Tour event since the 2008 Bank of America Championship. He eventually finished T20.

None of the 77 players in the field finished their rounds without a bogey. Tom Kite, Loren Roberts and David Peoples all had one bogey. Trevor Dodds had the most birdies in the event but he also had six bogeys to go along with six pars. He is currently T5. Dodds had the fewest putts in Round One – 24.

Bernhard Langer, who leads both the Charles Schwab Cup as well as the money race, opened with a 1-over-par 71 and is T11.

Hal Sutton withdrew after nine holes due to illness.

Keith Clearwater had the day’s lone eagle at No. 15.

Former University of Maryland golf coach and Maryland native Fred Funk fired a 2-over-par 72. In addition, Mike Reid, who lives in nearby Westminster, shot a 3-over-par 73.

Bob Gilder made his 167th consecutive start for events he’s been eligible for on Friday. The last time Gilder missed a tournament for which he was eligible was at the 2004 Greater Hickory Classic at Rock Barn. Mark Wiebe made his 49th consecutive start which leads the Champions Tour in that category.

The course is dramatically better than what was there. Combining holes, cutting up holes, it was really well done. I hope they love it....

I remember when Kite won the first Kemper Open played on the old course. It would be interesting if he wins the first event to be played on the new one.

Although I would guess that would be more of an interesting coincidence than anything else, because I would guess all the local knowledge built up probably doesn't amount to much on a rebuilt layout. Kite had a very good record on the old layout.

What are the changes?  From a google aerial shot, it looks like the changes were on #6 (green in front of the creek), 7 (tee moved up in front of the lake), 9 (green moved up the hill), 10 (made longer and they now play to the old 11th green), 13 (old par 5 now split into two holes - a 3 and a 4). Did I miss anything else?  From what little I saw on TV, it looks like they finally figured out how to get the place in really good shape.  The greens were always a disaster area in the four years I played out there and, many times, made the place near unplayable.

It looks really good on TV...Is this the second best TPC course now behind Sawgrass?

I played the old Avenal in (I believe) 4 Kemper Opens.
The course never matched what seemed like a good piece of land IMO.
Flipped on TGC today, and watched at least 3 different holes before I realized it was this course! :D

On tv, at least, the place looks heaps bettter!

Thanks Scott, couldn't have done it without the help of your guys!

And the help of volunteers from surrounding clubs!

You more or less have it right, I think. Based on an aerial and the website (which has a scorecard and a few photos but no in-depth detail), I've obtained an educated guess on the changes. It now plays as a par 70 instead of a par 71.

Stylistically, all the tees are now square and all the bunkers are more free-form, as opposed to the generally round-type they were on the old layout. It looks more 2010 and less 1986.

The first five holes look more or less the same. I believe #1 is about 40 yards longer and #3 is about 15-20 yards shorter (I seem to recall the original could be played at 240 but they rarely put it back there).

#6 was changed to a par-four and the green moved to the other side of the creek.... I believe the original was a poor reverse copy of #13 at Augusta and was highly disliked.

#7 and #8 are more or less the same, although #8 has been stretched out to around 470 yards.

#9 was the hole Greg Norman wanted to blow up with dynamite. The green looks like it has been moved well above and left of where it was before, and really doesn't sit on the creek's edge like it did.

#10 is now a longish par-five with the creek all the way down the left. The old par-3 11th is gone.

#11 is the old #12 and looks to be relatively unchanged.

#12 is a new hole, an uphill par-3 which appears to be slightly redan-like although the website only has it playing about 170 yards, so it might be too short.

#13 is another new hole and replaces the old par-5 13th, another hole that apparently everyone hated. It is a gentle, uphill dogleg right around 380-ish and has been highly praised, from what I have read.

#14-18 are similar to the originals. #14 was the driveable hole; it looks like they've made it a little bit uphill and put a couple of strategic bunkers in between the fairway and the creek.

The water par-3 (#17) is now about 225 yards and the old 18th has been dragged out to 460-470.

At the awards ceremony winner Mark O'Meara told the crowd that he had been exchanging text messages with Tiger the whole tournament praising the course and telling Tiger he needed to see it.  Expect a Tiger showing at TPC the week before next year's Open if not before.  JC
