I'm Sorry, a Philly Course Thread
« on: October 04, 2010, 12:29:39 PM »
Some of you know that I am very anal about things and this falls into that category. Next spring I will be spending a week in the Philly, Cherry Hill, Atlantic City area, I know there are a couple of good courses in the area. I will probably only have time for 3 rounds, aside from the obvious Merion, Pine Valley talk where would The Treehouse send me?

There have never ever been any threads on this topic, so don't even think of trying to use the search function.  Besides, the best courses in the philly area change monthly, if not weekly.  Of the 11 courses that opened nationwide in the past year, I think 20 or 30 of them were in the Philly Area.

Down at the Jersey Shore, make sure you play the Seaview Bay Course as well as Atlantic City CC.  Both are on the top of my list for shore courses.

When youre in Philly, I would try to play Glen Mills and Cobbs Creek.

All of these are public access places btw.

 Sam,

Golf enjoyment is subjective. Since there are so many great courses in Philly you need to tell us a little about what you like.

FDR and Pickering are not to be missed!   ::)

Dating back to 1940, the FDR Golf Club with its par 69, Florida-style layout, is relatively flat and open. Since club selection is often dictated by the prevailing winds, you can play FDR often and never play the same course twice. Wide fairways provide generous landing areas and large-sized greens are well guarded by numerous bunkers. In addition to natural wetlands, a canal runs through the course and crosses the fairway of the 420-yard signature 10th hole. Overall, water hazards can come into play on a total of ten holes. Franklin D. Roosevelt Golf Club features magnificent views of the Philadelphia skyline that will serve as a backdrop on many of your shots.

Does Florida style lay-out mean piece of crap?

Fair enough, I want something that is well designed and challenging but not to tough. I will be playing with some relatives who are chops and I'm not a patient person.

Do you have access or are you looking for it?

If you are a member of a club then you could probably get on just about anywhere minus Pine Valley and Merion.

I recently played Saucon Valley, White Manor, and Stonewall and throughly enjoyed each of them.  Can't imagine playing that triumverate and coming away dissatisfied.

I have access but if anyone wants to take me to their club where I can wear metal spikes, fart in the grill, and talk politics around everyone then I am in.

 Sam,

If the metal spikes are on your outfit and not your shoes then you would fit in nicely at Rolling Green.

Sam, I've not seen many mentions of courses on the right side of the Delaware River, but I'll toss one out there that your friends won't get beat up on, you'll find interesting in places, and is usually easy on the pocketbook:  Pitman.
