I've taken about 7 or 8 trips in the late January to February timeframe and we've always had a great time. Most of the trips have had really great days, with the rare bad one thrown in. Only once have the courses been close to unplayable and that was during an afternoon round after we'd played 18 in the morning in pretty good conditions. We did finish that round, but had some standing water on the 18th at Bandon, and we changed clothes after the first nine... That is a memorable 36 that still gets talked about. In the afternoon I broke 100 and beat my sub 5 index friend who could not during that afternoon round.

If the wind gets too bad to play "real" golf at the resort, head on over to the Ranch, which can handle almost any wind

On a side note, I played the Old Course (my one and only round) in Feb 2008 in a 40-45 mph steady wind gusting upwards of 60 mph (as stated by the starter who was looking at a wind reading machine and confirmed by the evening news).  Score was absolutely irrelevant as just making contact with the ball was an effort.  Balls would barely stay on greens, golf bags rolled away, balls needed to be teed at a 45 degree angle up wind, etc.  Fun in an "this is an adventure" sort of way, but hard play the game of golf as we all know it...

Well I should mention that I have one of those tubular hard plastic travel bags that doubles as a golf bag. 

But nonetheless, I had to make sure I pointed it into the wind when I set it on the ground, otherwise I'd get done with my shot and my bad would be 50 yards down the fairway behind me!

My experience with wind is that my golf bag feels like a propeller when I'm carrying it in windy conditions - I think it is a reason why many players choose to use a caddie at Bandon to avoid being exhausted after one round after all, I'm not young and strong like Richard Choi.

I made my first trip to Bandon a month ago and for the first 3 days there was nothing more than a 1 club wind.  On our last day at Pacific, the wind really started to pick up and sometimes it was 4+ clubs.  Examples - on 13 I hit a punch hybrid 325 off the tee....then off 14 I hit 4 iron from 150 and it didn't sniff the front....off 17 I hit 7 iron from 215 to the back....on 18, not one of us could reach the green in regulation.  Not even close!

I have only been to Bandon Dunes once, in October of 2002 (only Bandon and Pacific were there). We had 3 days where there were literally no clouds in the sky, almost no wind, and temps around 75. I'll never forget that my caddie, a guy named Hoops, said there were only about 30 of those days all year, and we got 3 of them.

I don't know if we were lucky or unlucky...probably a little of both.

I've been down probably 15 times, usullay 3 days a clip. More often than not the wind was light. I only remember a handful of days where there has been more than a 2 club wind. If you go to iwindsurf.com you can get one week forecasting.

Anyone going to Bandon has to realize -- the Oregon coast is renown for unpredictability with wind being the main headliner there.

If people can't handle that reality -- head to Scottsdale or Palm Spring for more reliable and tamer conditions.

I have spent over 100 days at Bandon in January.  I will say that I have worn my rain gear less than 50% of the time and generally play in a 1-2 club wind out of the south.  It is a rare occasion to have a really trying day that time of year.  Although jakaB can attest to some brutal weather we encounter in 07 or 08.

I have truly enjoyed reading about your adventures on this DG. I will be in Bandon from Jan 16th-24th.  If you are around I would love to buy you a pint of Oregon's finest at McKee's.

Thanks for the info and the offer of a pint! Unfortunately it's not the coming January I am talking about.

There is an increasingly good chance I might be around that part of the world in Jan 2012 - just getting an idea as to whether I should schedule golf into the equation. It seems the answer is definitely 'yes'!
